The National Alumni Association of Samuel Walker Houston High School recently awarded scholarships to four 2021 graduates of Huntsville High School. Recipients of the Rayford Jenkins Outstanding Minority Scholar Award were: KeNysha Johnson, who will be attending the University of Houston; Sasha Johnson, who will be attending Sam Houston State University; and Kristasia Polk, who will be attending Texas Southern University. Each scholarship is valued at $1,000.

Walker County Tax Office warns of car registration scam

The Walker County Tax Office and the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles are alerting residents about a motor vehicle registration scam hitting the area. County tax assessor-collector Diana McRae said that her office has received multiple calls from a phishing scam, in which customers are receiving information requests (via text messaging) purporting to come from TxDMV. The scam is used to attempt to trick individuals into giving up their private information.

Arrest made in Essex Blvd. shooting

The believed shooter in last week’s shooting on Essex Blvd. has been apprehended by law enforcement. Huntsville Police Department spokesperson Lt. Curt Landrum said Wednesday that deputies with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office executed a warrant on De’Ondre Mills, 21, of Huntsville. Mills is being charged with two counts for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and is being held at the Walker County Jail on bonds totaling $15,000.

Adaptive reuse of the old hospital is the correct route to take in enlarging our city hall. The bogus excuse that the buildings must be demolished due to asbestos makes no sense as the asbestos must be removed before the buildings could be demolished. Wish the asbestos gone, there is zero excuse to demolish perfectly good and sound buildings that could easily last for another 100 years.
