Celebrating Erwin’s history at the newly opened museum

Over 80 people, some coming from as far away as Arizona, attended the grand opening of the Erwin Museum last Saturday. This event was two years in the making, made possible by the work of many members of the past and present Erwin community. The building which houses the museum was built in 1908 and is the oldest remaining edifice from the original main street. There are on-going plans to add a gazebo beside the museum. Volunteers who staff the museum plan to rotate display items over time according to themes. The Erwin Museum will be open during the Erwin Junk Fest on Sat., Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Local middle school students attend Rushmore Music Camp

From July 31-August 5, middle school students from De Smet and Lake Preston attended the Rushmore Music Camp at Northern State University in Aberdeen. Rushmore Music Camp holds two sessions each year, one for grades 6-8, including incoming 6th graders and outgoing 8th graders, and one for high school students during the following week in Keystone. This was year 47 for the annual camp.

Legion recognizes Purple Heart recipients

To commemorate South Dakota’s Purple Heart Recognition Day, De Smet’s American Legion Post 138 hosted a ceremony in the theater of the De Smet Event and Wellness Center on Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. A good turnout of local residents came to pay their respects to those from our nation’s military who have earned this medal.

Sheriff’s Office responds to two-vehicle crash Tuesday

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 81 at its intersection with 220th Street on Tuesday morning. The report was at 7:15 Tuesday morning. Sheriff Tim Walburg said that a 15-year-old from Arlington was driving east on 220th Street, stopped for the stop sign, attempted to make a left turn onto the highway, and pulled out in front of another vehicle. That vehicle was driven by 57-year-old Brian Briggs of Watertown, who was traveling south on Highway 81.

Watertown bridge dedication planned on Saturday

The Big Sioux River Bridge on U.S. Highway 212 will be dedicated next month in honor of U.S. Army Sergeant James Haider. The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will host the state bridge dedication ceremony on Saturday to honor Haider. The ceremony is at 10:30 a.m. at the BG Ernie Edwards Readiness Center, 1951 N. Highway 20, in Watertown, according to a news release.
