Beaumont elects first Black female mayor in runoff

On the same day the United States celebrated its first federally-sanctioned Juneteenth, the City of Beaumont elected its first Black female mayor. Three-term former Ward IV Councilwoman Robin Mouton will be Beaumont’s next mayor and the only woman on the Beaumont City Council. She was elected with nearly 52% of the votes.

Beaumont held its annual Juneteenth celebration Saturday in Tyrrell Park, with music, food, lots of free sno-cones and more as the region celebrates the final freedom of slaves in Texas, who found out two years after the official emancipation proclamation was issued that they had been freed. The commemorative holiday was recently made an official federal holiday.
