Donald Edward Chadd Sr., 95, passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at his home in Rich Hill, Mo. Donald was born on March 8, 1926 in Milo, Mo., to Glen Jeremiah and Eva Blanch (Slates) Chadd. Don married Gladys Jones and to this marriage four children were born. He later married Morine Klum and she preceded him in death in 2003.

Mayor Knox named 'Citizen of the Year'

Starting in 1964, Nevada Rotary has undertaken the Citizen of the Year award process. This recognizes the person (or persons) who best exhibits the “service above self” life. Many worthy residents of Vernon County were nominated and Rotary encourages their names be re-submitted in the future. This year’s selection committee was made up of previous recipients who are not Rotarians, and the most recent Rotarians who were awarded the honor. This year’s Citizen of the Year is the 61st recipient: George Knox.

Vernon County mother facing child abuse charge

NEVADA, Mo. — A rural Milo woman has been ordered to stand trial on a charge that she physically abused her 11-year-old child. Shannon M. Bates, 38, waived a preliminary hearing Thursday in Vernon County Circuit Court on a felony count of child abuse. Associate Judge Brandon Fisher set her initial appearance in a trial division of the court on July 6.

Man waives hearing on discharging of gun inside Nevada motel room

NEVADA, Mo. — A Kansas man charged with firing a gun inside a motel room in Nevada waived a preliminary hearing this week in Vernon County Circuit Court. David W. Parker, 59, of Mound City, Kansas, waived the hearing Thursday on a felony count of discharging a firearm from an inhabited building and was ordered to stand trial. Associate Judge Brandon Fisher set Parker's initial appearance in a trial division of the court on July 6.

OTTAWA COUNTY, Okla. – Two are dead following a crash in Ottawa County Oklahoma. The Oklahoma State Highway Patrol says it happened a little after 11:00am yesterday morning on 220 Road north of Afton, Oklahoma. Police say 48-year old Douglas Goodner of Skiatook, Oklahoma and his passenger 59-year old William McWhit of Sand Springs, Oklahoma died in a wreck with another vehicle. A second passenger was taken to the hospital in fair condition. The driver of the other vehicle refused treatment at scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Father and son arrested in drive-by shooting case

VERNON COUNTY, Mo. – Authorities arrest a father and son for multiple-incidents including a drive-by shooting near Nevada, Missouri. According to Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher, they took a report of property damage at a home on South 1100 road near Moundville over Memorial Day weekend. Someone had shot an arrow through a window. The home had multiple broken windows and a horse was killed.

Coaches in the Golden Valley Vernon County Conference recently released their all-conference baseball teams, highlighted by four Hume Hornets making the first team. Logan Brooks, Peyton McFrederick, Blake Steuck, and Beriah Morrison, all from Hume, made first-team all-conference.
