Guest column: Education vs. incarceration for troubled teens

Something remarkable is about to happen at Gateway Community School in Camarillo, which serves students who have faced a rocky road on their high school journey. Some have been expelled from their regular high schools, and others have had run-ins with the law. All of them have faced significant hurdles as they work toward earning their high school diplomas. Typically, several of the students in Gateway’s senior class fail to meet the requirements for graduation. But this...

Arrested with Fentanyl, Guns, and Rocket Launcher

May 12, 2022 – Ventura County, Ca. Perhaps working on the philosophy of “go big or go home” often espoused by Ventura’s local community of surfers, when it comes to the retail sales of illicit narcotics, 39-year-old Albert Eklund was no small-timer. His May 11 th...

Guest column: Ventura and its phantom water

We have a spooky unnatural phenomenon here in Ventura — an invisible supply of water that the civic powers can barter with, even in its ghostly immaterial form. That’s what our City Council has just negotiated with a municipality not too far away. We will lease a partial allotment of our state water supply, which does not actually exist, to San Gorgonio, so we do not have to pay full price for a yearly promise of water,...

Letters to the editor: For and against Measures A and B; county DA race

A & B trying to eliminate industry In the early 1920s when oil and gas wells were first being drilled in Ventura County, a primary regulatory concern was water encroachment into the oil zones. In the 100 years since, the engineering and regulation has evolved. Problems that developed were solved. Water protections are built into the existing current state rules that all new wells must comply with. ...

Editorial: Newport, Laguna, Pismo ... and Hueneme?

When it came to naming their settlements, the founders of Ventura County’s villages were largely deferential to the region’s native American heritage and agricultural roots. Chumash words gave us “Simi,” “Ojai” and “Hueneme.” Oxnard was named for beet-processing brothers. Camarillo for a ranching family. In the Conejo Valley, apparently, they just counted trees. No one thought to call attention to perhaps the region’s most prominent feature, its 42 miles of Pacific coastline. That was conceded to other...

$75K Bail for Sticky-fingered Identity Thief

May 11, 2022 – Ventura County, Ca. As if working the counter as a cashier at any 7-11 convenience store isn’t stressful enough, when customers are brazen enough to walk behind into an “employees only” area to steal the employee’s wallet, it feels like a new low point of criminal activity.
