FORT SMITH — A Fort Smith man was sentenced Thursday to 110 months in federal prison followed by three years supervised release on one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The Honorable Judge P.K. Holmes, III, presided over the sentencing hearing in the United States District Court in Fort Smith.

A Sallisaw woman is facing drug charges, including a felony count of unlawful possession of controlled drug with intent to distribute (Fentanyl) after being found in possession of the drug during an executed search warrant by authorities. Cherokee Nation Wildlife Conservation to host second annual controlled deer hunts

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Cherokee Nation Wildlife Conservation department is hosting its second annual controlled hunts this fall on preserve land in Sequoyah County. The 2022 controlled deer hunts will be held on Cherokee Nation’s 4,000-plus-acre Sequoyah Hunting Preserve north of Sallisaw in Sequoyah County, with a select number of Cherokee elders, Cherokee veterans, Cherokee youth and Cherokee citizens being selected by a random draw of qualifying applicants. The controlled hunts are not subject to any residency requirement and applications are open to all Cherokee Nation citizens.

Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Gerald Lawrence Guyer, 79, of Van Buren, Arkansas passed away Friday, August 12, 2022, in his home surrounded by loved ones He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving during the Vietnam era and of the Christian faith. Jerry was a family practice doctor for over fifty years and spent most of those years divided between private practice in Stuttgart, Arkansas, and as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Gussie and Elmer Guyer.

Fort Smith Board of Directors halts major water projects in hopes of avoiding tax hike

The Fort Smith Board of Directors put a temporary stop to major city water projects. The board passed a resolution Tuesday night to halt water projects that cost more than 20% of city revenues. The directors did this in reaction to Act 605, which mandates that if a water project costs more than 20% of system revenues, then the city has to have a water rate study, which would determine how much the city would have to raise its water rates.
