Strong storms set to hit Upshur County Monday afternoon

Severe weather could impact Upshur County and the surrounding areas Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service in Charleston warned. “Two lines of thunderstorms are expected to form in advance of a cold front this afternoon into this evening,” the NWS said in issuing a severe thunderstorm watch. “Some of these storms may contain damaging wind gusts, large hail, and heavy downpours.”

Power outages in Upshur and Barbour Counties

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - Hundreds in North Central West Virginia are experiencing power outages. The biggest areas out of power are in Upshur and Barbour counties. As of 4:30 p.m., Upshur County has 2201 customers or 17% out of power. Barbour has 748 or 11.6% of customers out of power.

Upshur Trails group offers reward for volunteers

BUCKHANNON — The Upshur County Trails group has rewards ready for upcoming volunteer opportunities to help maintain and improve their ever-increasing trail mileage. The current maintenance of the trail system is completed solely by volunteers. This volunteer work in necessary for the trail system to continue to exist, explained Upshur County Trails group member and volunteer, Rachel Garton Weber. The group strongly encourages trail users to consider volunteering during these public volunteer opportunities. These public work days will be held on Saturday, July 24 and Saturday, August 21, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.

City denies rezoning request, observes Juneteenth holiday

BUCKHANNON — All members of Buckhannon’s City Council met Thursday to discuss strategic issues and hear reports from several departments. Before beginning agenda items, Council discussed President Joe Biden’s decision to sign into law a bill that proclaims Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Governor Jim Justice adopted this into state law, requiring municipalities to amend this holiday into their list of observed celebrations. After discussion on the financial repercussions of an additional holiday, City Council approved the motion to amend their holiday list to include Juneteenth, which will be observed on June 18 in the City of Buckhannon.
