Scholarship Awarded by Retired Teachers Group

The Union Parish Retired Teacher’s Association recently awarded its first Catherine Ballard Memorial Scholarship to Caroline Grace McPherson, a senior at D’Arbonne Woods Charter School. Ballard was a longtime member of the Union Parish Retired Teachers’ Association. Her daughter, Ann Lee, wanted to honor her mother by providing a scholarship for a student pursuing a degree in education from a Louisiana university. Students win literary rally honors

The Union Parish School Board met Monday for its regular session and approved and adopted several important agenda items. School Board President Shannon Barkley presented a plaque to Robert C. James, Jr. in honor of his father, Robert C. James, Sr. James, Sr., was a past President of the Louisiana School Boards Association as well as President of the Union Parish School Board for several years. The elder James was honored at the Louisiana School Board Association Convention March 6-8 in Baton Rouge, and a plaque was presented in his honor.

Prayer vigil held for Ronald Greene 3 years after his death

UNION PARISH, La. (KNOE) - It was a night of prayer for Ronald Greene. Greene’s family and friends gathered on May 10, 2022, where his family says he died in Union Parish. They called it the “I am your brother” prayer vigil. “I’m your brother, I’m scared!” Green yelled while allegedly being stunned, punched, and dragged by state police.

Federal Prosecutors grow skeptical during case against troopers involved in death of Ronald Greene

After a months-long investigation into the 2019 Union Parish roadside death of Ronald Greene in State Police custody, federal prosecutors are growing skeptical they can bring a successful civil rights violation case against any of the troopers involved. The problem is video evidence doesn’t seem to show that officers acted “willfully” to hurt Greene. Baton Rouge criminal defense attorney Richard Sprinkle says the real sticking point is the word “willfully”.

BATON ROUGE – Today marks the three-year anniversary of Ronald Greene’s death. The 49-year-old Black man died following a lengthy high-speed chase that ended in Union Parish. Two years later body camera video was released, showing Troopers stunning and punching Greene as he apologized. Paramedic Cindy Ott recently described what she saw when she arrived on the scene.
