A gig worker has gone viral for his heartbreaking plea that delivery service customers should tip better. “Yo, I wish people knew what it was like to deliver for Uber Eats, Postmates, DoorDash, all these companies,” Smithson Michael said in the video, uploaded to his TikTok handle @deliveryguy100. “I just spent an hour driving around for a $1.19 tip.”

San Francisco Is One Step Closer to a Permanent Cap on Delivery Fees

Welcome to p.m. Intel, your bite-sized roundup of Bay Area food and restaurant news. Tips are always welcome, drop them here. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors met Thursday, June 10 to discuss implementing a permanent cap on what third-party delivery apps — like Grubhub, DoorDash, and Uber Eats — can charge restaurants, and it’s moving forward, with a vote anticipated next week. The legislation would make a 15-percent cap on fees permanent, a measure that was adopted on a temporary basis in 2020, while allowing restaurants to sign a separate marketing agreement with the companies for other services. The supervisor behind the proposal, Aaron Peskin, was not present for the meeting, however — the same day, he announced he was entering alcohol treatment following complaints about his behavior and allegations that he was under the influence during recent board meetings. Peskin, the board’s longest-serving member, has also added amendments and delayed making parklets permanent, which was discussed earlier this week and is scheduled for a vote on June 22. There are many different ways to earn points and miles, from the obvious ones (like flying or spending on a credit card) to some that aren’t as well known (like online shopping portals). One of my favorite ways to “double-dip” and earn a higher bonus on purchases I was planning to make already is by signing up for airline dining rewards programs.

Sun Tea Mix stirs up new business by delivering smiles

"We opened in March 2020 at Keawe Retail at our Kakaako." Emma Pan talks about the grand opening for her brand new shop, Sun Tea Mix in Kakaako, which was sort lived because Pandemic Restrictions forced her business to close days later. "We reopened in May. Unfortunately, we couldn't open a dining service; we could only provide takeout and delivery services. As a result, we lost all our tourism business last year." She was afraid her unique idea for drinks and deserts might not take off with no foot traffic and very few visitors. "We make Tea related beverages and desert-like souffle pancakes." As it turned out, her initial instinct was right. Despite restrictions, Sun Tea Mix is in demand.

Delivery providers accused of violating NYC fee cap

A New York City restaurant is accusing DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats of violating the city's limit on delivery fees. In a lawsuit filed Monday, the owners of Michaeli Bakery in Manhattan said the third-party providers restructured their fees to get around New York's 20% fee cap, which limits delivery fees to 15% and any additional fees to 5%. The temporary cap was put in place last June to help restaurants during the pandemic and will last until after restaurants are allowed to return to full capacity.
