Wildfire engulfs Sequoia National Forest in California

Smoke billowed from the Wishon Fire burning east of Springville in the Sequoia National Forest, California, on Monday, 15 August.As of Thursday, the blaze had burned 350 acres and was at 45 per cent containment.Aerial footage from the Fire Integrated Real Time Intelligence System shows clouds of smoke coming from the fire.The Tulare County Sheriff's office issued evacuation orders on Monday for residents living near the fire, but these orders were later lifted.Sign up to our newsletters. VISALIA – Almost three months ago, a HAWK touched down in Visalia, taking pedestrians under its protective wing as they cross Lovers Lane along the Packwood Creek Trail. On May 18, the first-ever High-intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) in Visalia was unveiled on Lovers Lane (Highway 216) at the Packwood Creek Trail Crossing, located between Tulare and Walnut Ave. According to the City of Visalia website, HAWK appears more like a beacon and functions like any other crosswalk traffic light, with either a button or sensor available for pedestrians to use when they need to cross.

Tulare County Crop Report for week ending Aug. 20

Cotton fields are in full bloom. Some fields of alfalfa are being cut for silage and baled for dairy feed. Corn silage harvest is in full swing throughout the county. Corn fields that were planted late in the season are still immature, with plants that have not formed tassels. Silage fields that have been harvested are being fertilized and prepped for winter crops. Bean fields continue to be treated for weeds and insects. Dried beans are being exported to Guadeloupe and St. Lucia.
