State 'B' Legion: Tabor Looks To Make Splash

TABOR – Tabor ran through the Region 4B Tournament to make it to their third state tournament in four years, and they used the help of four Wagner kids to make this push. “I think they have meshed really well together and I think what helped is there was not one or two coming from Wagner, it was a group of four,” Tabor manager Gary Kortan said. “They always have their own little group to fall back on, rather than just another guy and our guys really accepted them.”

These beams that went in last week show the position of what will be a new scoreboard at the Freeman Public Schools track and football field complex. The school board earlier this year approved the project through Daktronics; a new scoreboard with a stat panel will also be installed at the Freeman High School gym.

JEREMY WALTNER - PUBLISHER. One year ago, on the last Saturday of July, the Freeman Prairie Arboretum was quiet. The sprawling, 40-acre grounds located on the southwestern portion of Freeman was supposed to be alive with the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the third annual South Dakota Chislic Festival but, like many other things, the 2020 event was canceled because of ongoing concerns about the coronavirus and the spread of COVID-19.

The Canistota/Freeman Sticks didn’t just host the 2021 Class B VFW State 14U Baseball Tournament last weekend. Taking part in their first-ever state tournament at the Teener level, the Sticks finished on top in improbable fashion by knocking off three-time defending champion Canova Sunday evening, July 25. Canistota/Freeman used an 11-run fifth inning to dramatically turn around what had been a 1-0 deficit and barely gave an inch thereafter, finishing on the winning side of a 14-3 final. The Sticks’ three-game sweep also included a 5-1 win over Baltic Friday night and a 12-1 win over Clark on Saturday. All tournament games — 11 of them played July 23-25 — were held at Merchants State Bank Field in a tournament organized and run by the Canistota/Freeman Sticks community.
