Fire departments respond to barn fire in High Springs

HIGH SPRINGS, Fla. – In the early morning hours, units from Alachua County Fire Rescue, High Springs Fire Rescue, and the Newberry Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the area of NW 256th Way. Upon arriving, units found a large barn that was fully involved. Crews quickly contained the fire to keep it from spreading. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Final voter fraud suspect arrested for driving without a valid license

ALACHUA, Fla. – John Boyd Rivers, 44, was arrested late last night and charged with driving without a valid license as a habitual offender. Rivers is also the final suspect to be arrested of the ten convicted felons who have been charged for fraudulently registering to vote and/or fraudulently voting following visits to the jail by a representative from the Supervisor of Elections Office; five of the suspects have been sentenced.

Levy County Supervisor of Elections reminds voters of Oct. 11 voter registration deadline for General Election

Tammy Jones, Supervisor of Elections for Levy County, reminds voters that Tuesday, Oct. 11 is the last day to register to vote in time for the Nov. 8 General Election. "I encourage all eligible Levy County citizens who wish to participate in the General Election to register to vote," Jones said. "Voters have several options to register in Levy County, and my office will hold extended hours of operation on October 11 to ensure that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to register."

GRU continues late fee policy for October

Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) will continue waiving late utility fees for October, continuing the policy started for July, August and September. The policy started as an effort to help customers struggling with high summer bills, according to a press release. GRU also returned security deposits 12 months early for some customers.
