One of these two Topekans will be city’s next mayor

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The list of people wanting to be Topeka’s next mayor was cut down to two candidates Tuesday evening. With all election precincts reporting, Mike Padilla and Leo Cangiani will face off in the Nov. 2 general election. After current Mayor Michelle De La Isla announced she wouldn’t seek reelection as she was quitting politics, five candidates including Padilla, Cangiani, Patrick Klick, Daniel Brown and John Lauer joined in the race. A current city council member, Mike Padilla was the only candidate for mayor before the other four hopped in last-minute before the entry deadline in June.

Topeka hospital sees highest number of COVID patients since months ago

TOPEKA (KSNT) — The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus saw 16 COVID patients on August 3. That’s the most the hospital has seen in months. The increase of patients is due to the highly contagious Delta variant, which is spreading rapidly across Kansas. Out of all of the patients within the last couple of months, 80 percent of them were unvaccinated. Kansas City hospitals are reporting they saw four times as many COVID patients in July versus the month of June. Topeka is falling in line with those numbers as well.

Turnpike crash causes 'minor' damage to Topeka Service Area bridge; conditions of five hospitalized unknown

It took almost eight hours for the roadways to clear following a crash Monday evening just east of Topeka that left five people hospitalized. The accident, which involved two semi trucks and two passenger vehicles, occurred when one of the semis lost control, crossed multiple lanes of traffic, struck and flipped over the barrier wall between the highway's east and westbound lanes, and eventually caught fire.
