The Texas Primary Runoffs Elections for the March 1, 2022, Primary Elections begin this week with early voting. This is one more election before the General Mid-Terms Election in November. State law dictates in a primary election the candidates from both parties must have a majority of the votes, or basically 50% plus one vote. However, when three or more are running in a contested primary race, some candidates might get a plurality of votes, but not the overall majority. So beginning today Monday, May 16, 2022, locally in Terry County, there are two Republican Primary Runoffs. One is for County Judge and the other is for Justice of the Peace. There are also other state-wide Republican and Democrat runoffs as well.

In the contested races the two Meadow ISD At-Large positions and the two City of Meadow At-Large positions the Terry County Joint Elections office (TCJE) will be obtaining a court order from the 121st District Court and Honorable Judge Trey Didway. On Monday May 9, 2022 the TCJE Administrator Krystal Valentin sent an email to TownTalk regarding the fact that there were 59 early votes not counted in the City of Meadow and Meadow ISD contested races.

Tuesday evening as the sun set across the South Plains the thunderstorms packed an extra punch. A Dust Storm Warning was issues for five different counties, including Hale and Lubbock. With the wall of dust making its way across the region during nightfall, it will severely impact driving along streets and highways, including Texas Highway 114 and Interstate 27 between Lubbock and Plainview.

There were five contested Municipal Elections and two Texas Constitutional Propositions in Terry County on Saturday May 7, 2022. In the Brownfield ISD At-Large Unexpired Term, Matthew Valdonado took the win with 56% of the vote over Edgar Rivera. This is an unexpired term, meaning Valdonado will finish out the term of this position. In April 2021, former board member Will Hawkins resigned from the board to take the Superintendents position at Silver City Public Schools in Silver City New Mexico. The BISD Board of Trustees appointed Edgar Rivera to that position until the voters would be able to decide in the May 2022 Municipal Election.

Sherill stated that Poka Lambro Cooperative was formed in 1950 to bring telephone service to rural areas and farms. Today, Poka Lambro has fiber to home network passing approximately 4, 363 establishments in Terry County, which is an 87% coverage.

Wagner and City of Brownfield Mayor Tom Hesse signed and sealed a proclamation for Local Law Enforcement Appreciation Week which will run from May 15 – 21, 2022. Terry County and the City of Brownfield continues to support this week long event. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund was founded in 1984 and continues to be dedicated to telling the story of American Law Enforcement and making it safer for those who serve.
