How can you help with the foster care crisis?

The need for foster care throughout the state and nation has become a true crisis. In 2021, the Taylor County Foster Care system had 20 children or youth in foster care for part or all of the year. Already this year 27 children or youth are in placement. Taylor County currently has seven licensed foster homes throughout the entire county, however due to different circumstances we are currently limited to 1 or 2 homes that are able to accept placement of a child at any given time.

County eyes federal funds for projects

Taylor County is looking to tap into federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to help fund a number of one-time purchases around the county. Members of the Taylor County Finance and Personnel committee on Monday gave their approval to spending ARPA funds for radio equipment for the sheriff’s department and county fire departments as well as for boat landing replacement at Miller Dam and replacement of a parking lot at the Taylor County Education Center.

Committee looks at raising license fee as costs climb

Taylor County pet owners could pay more in annual license fees to meet the rising cost of caring for strays and surrendered animals. Representatives from the Taylor County Humane Society came to Monday’s meeting of the county’s Law Enforcement Committee asking for an 8.5% increase in funding in next year’s contract due to rising costs as a result of inflation and usage of the shelter. This works out to be a $4,229 increase over the current year.
