Decatur City Schools mourn the loss of beloved teacher

DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) - Decatur City Schools is mourning the loss of a beloved staff member. According to Decatur City Schools, Amanda McCurry, a third-grade teacher at Oak Park Elementary School, suddenly died on Sept. 17. WAFF is told McCurry was passionate about education and youth sports. She also served as an AHSAA volleyball official.

OAW Indoor Sports Complex announces grand opening

NEW BERLIN — The Orthopedic Associates of Wisconsin announced Friday the grand opening of its new sports complex in New Berlin will take place Oct. 1. Work on the 153,000-square-foot Ethic Indoor Sports Facility began in mid-November of 2020. Demolition of the long-vacant Prospect Hill School, 5530 S. Racine Ave., took place to make way for the new project.

Hammond looking to expand Sportsplex, add more volleyball courts

HAMMOND — Generations of Region residents shopped at Woodmar Mall in Hammond, visiting stores like J.J. Newberry, Foot Locker and Woodmar Records. Many played arcade games or ate Schoop's in the neon-lit food court of the mall at Indianapolis Boulevard and 165th Street, which was one of Northwest Indiana's first to open back in 1954. The mall was razed in 2006 after years of slow decline, and the remaining three-story Carson's department store came down in 2018 after that chain — like so many other brick-and-mortar retailers in an age of one-click shopping — went bankrupt.

ZEBULON — The Zebulon Board of Commissioners adopted a parks and recreation master plan during its Sept. 13 meeting. “Play Zebulon” is a long-range planning document that seeks to shape the future of parks and recreation in town over the next 10-15 years.
