How a junior officer became supreme commander of the Russian army

Nikolai Krylenko was a lawyer and ardent revolutionary. Having landed in the Russian army by accident, he was appointed commander-in-chief by Lenin for a special mission. On Nov. 22, 1917, something unheard-of took place in the Russian army. For the first time in its history, it was headed not by the emperor or a general, but by a junior officer - a lowly ensign (praporshchik). But Nikolai Krylenko was appointed commander-in-chief by Vladimir Lenin not to lead Russia to victory in WWI. Far from it. His task was to get the country out of the conflict as quickly as possible.

Obituary: Nina Louise Sparacino (1918-2021)

Experience the very best of the Kent coast

The wonderful White Cliffs of Dover are so much more than an iconic Kent image – this rare chalk grassland environment and conservation area is home to grazing Exmoor ponies, major rewilding efforts, and significant wartime history. Fan Bay Deep Shelter was constructed in the cliffs in 1941 as accommodations for a gun battery. A tour, wearing a fetching hard hat and head torch, takes you down 125 steps through these abandoned WWII-era tunnels. At the foot of the cliffs, step out to see sound mirrors dating from WWI. These giant dishes built into the chalk were an early warning system designed to pick up the sound of aircraft as it crossed the Channel.
