As Kanye West finalizes the plans on his second listening party, Mercedes-Benz Stadium officials are temporarily changing its name in honor of its world famous resident. Multiple media outlets report that West is trying to figure out how to make the second listening session on Aug. 5 different from the first in order to fill all the seats as he did on July 22, 2021.

Suspect ID’d in fatal fight in Dawsonville

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the man charged in the death of a 19 year-old from Lumpkin County: 20 year-old Daniel Roberts is from Dawsonville. He is facing counts that include aggravated assault and battery. Kaleb Duckworth was killed in a fight in the parking lot of a restaurant in Dawson County.

A day after the Clarke County School District said masks would be mandatory for all people on all campuses when the new school year begins on August 4, school officials in Monroe said masks would be optional in schools in Walton County. Man stabbed in face at downtown Athens bar

Athens-Clarke County Police report the arrest of a Gwinnett County man accused of stabbing a worker in a bar in downtown Athens. Jewell Clay is 29 years old, from Lawrenceville. The alleged assault is said to have happened last weekend. The man who was stabbed was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.

CCSD changes mask guidance for new school year

With nine days until the start of a new school year in Athens, there is new coronavirus guidance from the Clarke County School District: after first saying masks would be optional, then that they would be mandatory for students younger than age 12, the School District’s Central Office now says face coverings will be required indoors at all elementary and middle schools, for students, staff, and visitors, regardless of vaccination status, and they will be mandatory on all Clarke County School buses. First day of the new school year is August 4.

Auburn Police Officer killed in Barrow Co crash

An off-duty Auburn Police Officer is identified as one of the two men killed in a car crash that happened last weekend in Barrow County: Jacob Peek was 25 years old, from Bogart. His car collided with another vehicle on Carl-Midway Road. The driver of the second vehicle, Zachary Smith of Auburn, was also killed. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.

Suspect arrested after deadly shooting in Gainesville

There is an ongoing homicide investigation in Hall County: a 21 year-old Gainesville man was killed in a weekend shooting. The Hall County Sheriff’s Office says Qualyn Tanner was shot, allegedly by 32 year-old Daniel Guerrero. Guerrero was arrested and charged with murder after he was found walking along I-985 in Hall County.

GA DPH data shows slight uptick in Athens COVID numbers

The Georgia Department of Public Health says there has been a slight increase in the number of positive tests for coronavirus in Athens. There have been 68 confirmed cases over the past two weeks, bringing the total since the pandemic began to just under 13 thousand. DPH says the Clarke County vaccination rate mirrors that of the state, with 39 percent of Athens residents now considered fully vaccinated against coronavirus.

Woman found, rescued 12 hours after deadly crash in Hall Co

A weekend crash left one person dead and another seriously injured: the State Patrol says the single-vehicle accident happened on Old Cornelia Highway in Hall County. 27 year-old Connor Wales of Forsyth County was killed; a 22 year-old passenger from Gainesville was injured and taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Sentences handed down in deputy’s death in Gainesville

Three of four defendants charged in the murder of Hall County Sheriff’s Deputy Blaine Dixon were sentenced Thursday in Gainesville: confessed gunman Hector Garcia-Solis gets life in prison with no possibility of parole; life sentences for the other two. A fourth suspect is awaiting trial on charges stemming from the July 2019 Dixon shooting: the deputy was killed while chasing car theft suspects in Gainesville.
