Balloting comes to a close at five early voting precincts in Athens

A week of early voting comes to a close today in Athens, with voters casting advance ballots ahead of next Tuesday’s US Senate runoff. The early voting wraps up at 5 o’clock this afternoon at the Elections Office on Washington Street, the Library on Baxter Street, the Tennis Center on Lexington Road, the Miriam Moore Community Center on McKinley Drive, and the Extension Office on Cleveland Road in Bogart. Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock is trying to hold off a challenge from Republican Herschel Walker.

There is a charge of involuntary manslaughter for a teenager in Hall County: Brandon Soto is from Flowery Branch. He is accused of supplying the fentanyl that caused the death of 17 year-old Halaya Herrera, who overdosed in July in Oakwood. Soto was, at last report, being held without bond in the Hall County jail.

The session is called in the wake of a weekend ruling from a judge in Atlanta who says counties can allow early voting this coming Saturday, despite an earlier edict from Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who said the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday precluded early voting two days later.

A lawyer was stunned after a judge berated him on national television for failing to appear in court following his stroke. Matt Tucker, a lawyer in Clayton County, Georgia, suffered a stroke this weekend and was unable to attend jury selection for his client Hannah Payne, who was charged in 2019 with murdering Kenneth Herring, 62, while attempting to arrest a civilian.

Cedar Shoals reopens after student sets fire in bathroom

Athens-Clarke County Police detained a student after a Wednesday fire at Cedar Shoals High School. Investigators say the blaze that burned in a bathroom of the school was apparently intentionally set. There were no injuries. The school, which sent students home after the incident, will be open for classes this morning.

Hall County Sheriff’s Office investigators say they found more than three dozen weapons and more than $40 thousand worth of marijuana at Stowers’ home in Gainesville. He is being held without bond.
