On the line: Mustangs need win at Trinity to reach postseason

Laurel Highlands faces a clear-cut scenario as the high school football season enters Week Eight tonight. The Mustangs (2-3, 5-3) travel to Trinity (1-3, 2-6) with a WPIAL playoff spot on the line out of the Big Eight Conference. LH can claim sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot with a win but the Hillers would pull even with Laurel Highlands if they win and would claim that postseason berth via the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Ringgold sophomore repeats, runners get WPIAL preview at Tri-State cross country meet

Cross country runners competing in the WPIAL championship on Oct. 28 were able to preview the Cal (Pa.) course Thursday at the annual Tri-State Track Coaches Association meet. Because covid-19 forced the WPIAL to find a new home — White Oak Park — in 2020, many underclassmen got to test their skills on Cal’s famous hill around the 2-mile mark. Some of the top female runners — Moon senior Mia Cochran, Brownsville’s sophomore Jolena Quarzo and Greensburg Central Catholic senior Corinn Brewer — skipped the event to rest their legs.

Sorry NFL fans, Chick’s Picks’ crystal ball is reserved for H.S. football prognosticating

As a long-time local celebrity, it is not often that Chick’s Picks is star struck. This past weekend, however, was an exception. Chick’s Picks was invited to take part in the Steelers halftime celebration honoring recent Hall of Fame inductees. All of her years of fame still did not prepare her for being in the presence of legends such at Troy Polamalu, Donnie Shell, Alan Faneca and coach Bill Cowher. Nonetheless, Chick’s Picks did her best to keep her cool.

Lady Wildcats fall in WPIAL tennis championship

For the first time in a long time, the Greater Latrobe girls’ tennis team will have to respond after a loss. The Lady Wildcats’ perfect record was blemished in the WPIAL Class 3A Championship on Wednesday, as No. 3 seed Upper St. Clair defeated top-seeded Greater Latrobe 4-1 at Washington & Jefferson College to claim the district title. In the process, Greater Latrobe (11-1) was unable to successfully defend the title that it won a year ago, and was denied the fourth WPIAL team title in program history.

Lady Wildcats ready for soccer playoffs, Lady Rams finish season with win

The Greater Latrobe girls’ soccer team is preparing to begin its playoff journey, while the Ligonier Valley girls ended its season on a high note. Greater Latrobe secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming WPIAL Class 4A playoffs, while Ligonier Valley closed its season with a 3-2 victory against North Star during an exhibition game played at Weller Field.

WPIAL Clinched for Oct. 21, 2021: Girls volleyball

The 2021 WPIAL girls volleyball regular season has come to an end as 71 teams have earned a ticket to ride into the postseason starting next week. The top four teams in each section qualify for the district playoffs. All teams tied for a playoff spot in which head-to-head does not break the tie qualify for the postseason.

Skillings no longer coach of DA football team

Vince Skillings is no longer head coach of the Derry Area football team. Skillings confirmed to the Bulletin on Wednesday that had been relieved of his duties, even though the Trojans have two regular-season WPIAL Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference games remaining, including Friday’s 7 p.m. home finale at Derry Stadium against Burrell.

Rams set sights on postseason, treating SSA clash as playoff game

After going two weeks without playing a football game, the injury-riddled Ligonier Valley football team was glad to get back on the field last Friday night. The Rams were even happier to come away with a 43-14 win against Summit Academy to pick up their first conference win of the season and keep their WPIAL Class 2A playoff hopes alive.

WPIAL 2021 Week 8 Games of the Week

The final two weeks of the WPIAL regular season are suddenly upon us. Last weekend Hampton became the first team to clinch a conference title. It was the first for the Talbots since 2014 and just their fifth in school history. This week, a number of other schools will have the opportunity to clinch conference titles and playoff spots. Of the 73 playoff spots, only 27 have been secured so far. Check out our Playoff Scenarios breakdown for what needs to happen for each team to get in. Mathematically, only 8 teams are eliminated from playoff contention as we head into the penultimate game.

Here are four WPIAL high school football players to watch in Week 8:. Boyd (5-9, 163) ran for 173 yards and a touchdown as McKeesport beat Laurel Highlands, 42-7, last week. The Tigers (7-1, 4-0) face another tough test in the Class 4A Big East Conference this week when they host Thomas Jefferson (5-1, 3-1).

Local teams bidding for postseason spots

CHARTIERS VALLEY (1-2, 4-4) AT NEW CASTLE (2-1, 5-3) This is a WPIAL Class 4A Parkway Conference matchup. The Red Hurricane bolstered its playoff hopes last week with a come-from-behind 22-21 road win over Blackhawk. New Castle scored a touchdown on a 3-yard run by quarterback Chris Hood with 44 seconds left. The ‘Canes elected to go for two and the lead. Hood’s two-point conversion pass was completed to Matayo Savage and New Castle hung on for the win.
