Amanda Holden backs war on offshore wind farm with 1,066ft turbines taller than the Eiffel Tower which would blight West Sussex coast

Amanda Holden is backing a campaign to halt a wind farm that would have turbines taller than the Eiffel Tower from blighting one of Britain’s most beautiful coastlines. The Britain’s Got Talent judge is angry at plans by German energy company RWE to erect the giant towers of up to 1,066ft within sight of the West Sussex coast.

More effective wind turbines: Optimized for little wind

Wind power plays an important role in the energy transition. Two engineers are focusing on the development of inexpensive, effective systems: A lot of electricity should be generated even at low wind speeds. Markus Becker and Benno Sandmann, managing directors of windwise GmbH from Münster, proudly hold a small wind...

The 1955 Costa Hill Wind Turbine

In 1887 the first known wind turbine used to produce electricity was built in Scotland. Professor James Blyth of Anderson’s College, Glasgow (which was to become Strathclyde University) built a wind turbine in the garden of his holiday cottage. It was 10m high with cloth sails. Ernest William Golding...

Offshore wind pushes crane technology to new heights

Mega-sized offshore wind turbines are driving the development of a new generation of ever-larger and more powerful offshore cranes. A new generation of skyscraper-sized wind turbines for offshore windfarms are driving requirements for more powerful offshore cranes with higher lifting capabilities. One of the latest examples is an order placed by Denmark’s BMS Heavy Cranes with Dutch crane specialist Huisman for a 3,000-tonne capacity ringer crane, optimised for use in the offshore wind industry. The crane will be able to lift components of 1,200 tonnes to a height of up to 225 m and heavy structures of 3,000 tonnes at reduced height. This makes it suitable for use with next-generation wind turbines and on floating foundations.

Second chances for laid-up leviathans

Everyone deserves a second chance. The same can be said for vessels. For laid-up vessels, second chances will come in the form of being refit or repurposed for work for which they were originally not intended — most likely outside the oil and gas sector. A handful of the...

Statkraft to start construction of 80 MW wind power project in Brazil

Morro do Cruzeiro is a greenfield wind project, developed by Statkraft in Brazil. The project entails two wind farms, 14 turbines and a total installed capacity of 80 MW. The wind farms are located in the state of Bahia, close to Statkraft’s existing wind power assets. Given the excellent wind conditions in the area, the project will generate 386 GWh of renewable energy per year, enough to power more than 190,000 Brazilian homes.
