UNC Football: Wake Forest Game Thread

There are a lot of weird things about today’s UNC football game. First off, it’s the old Wake-Forest-is-in-the-ACC-but-this-isn’t-an-ACC-game thing that is always super confusing. Then there is the overwhelming likelihood that this is going to be a shootout of untold proportions. Can the Heels on the field today score more than the guys did on the court last night? I mean…maybe?

Fall Report: Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — For the second straight season, 2021 was supposed to be The Year for Wake Forest. After their 2017 super regional run, the Demon Deacons spent a couple of years building with an eye on 2020, when they were both talented and experienced — but they got off to a slow start and then the season was canceled. It felt like Wake Forest got a mulligan when the core veterans from 2020 went unselected in the five-round draft and returned to campus for another go-round — accomplished players like Bobby Seymour and Chris Lanzilli and Michael Turconi[…]

First look: Top story lines, betting odds for the UNC-Wake Forest football game

Just so there is no confusion, North Carolina’s game against No. 10 Wake Forest this week will not count in the ACC standings for the second straight season. The traditional rivals scheduled these games because the ACC schedule for teams in separate divisions brings the matchup together once every seven seasons. Carolina last played Wake in a conference game in 2015 and is scheduled to do so again in Winston-Salem in 2022.

Tale of the Tape: Wake Forest vs UNC

One thing that has irked me over the UNC game week isn’t the betting line, which man I will be taking Wake moneyline, but the fact that it just seems to be this overall assumption that UNC is the one with the unstoppable offense and an opportunistic defense that’s just a play or two away from being as good as everyone thought in the preseason. Wake has their deficiencies here and there, and there are some games looking at the box score and postgame win expectancies they probably shouldn’t have won, looking at you Louisville and Syracuse. With that being said, they found ways to win and UNC hasn’t in 4 out of 8 games.
