Twins' Game 1 loss to Astros result of ninth-inning meltdown, weak offense

In the end, there were breakdowns everywhere. A dysfunctional offense. An imperfect defense. And a couple of bad pitches thrown at the wrong time. The Twins did not look like a division champion on Tuesday in a 4-1 loss to Houston to open the best-of-three wild-card series. The defeat at Target Field immediately put them in an elimination game Wednesday, in which a loss would send them into a bubble-less October.

Twins' Game 1 bullpen usage leaves much to be desired

There was a time not long ago, in the days before Zoom interviews, and before regional TV representatives were anointed to ask the opening questions in postgame interviews, that a sportswriter could enter into a discussion with a Twins manager such as Ron Gardenhire. A frequent complaint from Gardy in...

Twins To Promote Alex Kirilloff for Playoffs

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said before Game 1 on Tuesday. "It's a move that, once you get to know the player and the person, you're excited to make. He's a young guy. very mature guy." He added, "He doesn't seem to let very much affect him at all. A guy who worries about the things he can control, and that's it."

Twins To Add Top Prospect Alex Kirilloff To Playoff Roster

In a surprise move, the Twins are set to promote top outfield prospect Alex Kirilloff for what would be his MLB debut during the first round of the postseason. Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported last night that the move was being discussed, and both Seth Stohs of TwinsDaily.com and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com (Twitter link) hear that Kirilloff is indeed being added to the big league roster. His contract will need to be formally selected, although fellow rookie outfielder Brent Rooker is on the 10-day IL with a season-ending forearm fracture, so he could just be moved to the 45-day injured list to open a spot on the 40-man roster.

Twins' Josh Donaldson takes part in workout; status for Game 1 uncertain

Josh Donaldson’s bat is in postseason shape, as he proved by battering batting-practice baseballs around Target Field on Monday. The condition of his sore calf, however, isn’t quite as clear. Donaldson did some sidestepping drills and stop-and-starts on the turf during the Twins’ workout with head athletic trainer Michael Salazar...

Twins hit reset button, ready for deep run

MINNEAPOLIS -- Nothing about this 2020 season has been typical. So, why not take the opportunity to wipe the slate clean from the Twins' lack of playoff success in the last decade and rewrite the script? Minnesota's 16 straight playoff losses are but a figment of the past, replaced by this team that overcame injuries around the roster, the struggles of a season derailed by COVID-19 and a challenge from the surging White Sox to win consecutive division titles for the first time since 2009-10. •AL Wild Card Series presented by Hancook Tire, Game 1: Tue., 1 p.m. CT, ABC.

Minnesota Twins: Is this year’s Playoff Rotation the best of the 2000s?

Is this year’s playoff rotation one of the best of the 2000s? We compare them to the best rotations of past Minnesota Twins playoff teams from the last 20 years. The Minnesota Twins have won the AL Central for the second straight year and have made the postseason nearly 10 times since 2002. Most of that success has come from the team’s excellent offensive cores from over the years.

Back-to-back! Twins clinch AL Central title

MINNEAPOLIS -- All that offseason excitement feels like such a long time ago -- the buzz around the Twins after the splashy signing of Josh Donaldson, the blockbuster trade for Kenta Maeda and the idea that a reinforced Bomba Squad would bash and soar to another American League Central championship.

Twins hope they'll need one, but aren't sure who'll be their closer

First of all, the obvious: Rocco Baldelli would love to be faced with a difficult decision about who to pitch to preserve a lead in the ninth inning. It just doesn’t come up too often around here. No Twins pitcher has taken the mound in a postseason save situation since...

Twins' Rocco Baldelli won't be manager of the year again, but his work was just as impressive

The Twins have concluded their 60th regular season, shrunken though it was, and the big-league club has employed 14 managers over these six decades. Billy Martin held the best winning percentage, .599, among Twins managers, based on having a tremendous club that went 97-65 to win the first American League West in 1969, and then getting fired for being such a lout.

5 Reasons Why This Twins Team is Different

At this point, the story of the Minnesota Twins Postseason failures have become all too repetitive. Dating back to 2004, the Twins have a Postseason losing streak of 16 games, with 13 of those losses coming at the hands of the New York Yankees, though you probably knew that already.

Twins clinch home field for first round; AL Central title to be decided Sunday

The Twins will open the playoffs at Target Field for the first time since 2010, that much they accomplished on Saturday. But there is still work to be done on Sunday. Luis Arraez collected four hits in his first game since Sept. 8, three of them doubles, and Minnesota battered Cincinnati, 7-3 at Target Field. The victory insures that the Twins, who still hold a one-game lead over the White Sox in the AL Central, will be one of the top four seeds in the AL playoffs and thus will host all three games of a first-round series beginning Tuesday.
