(Sidney) -- After a period of multiple heavy rainfalls, the city of Sidney has taken steps to address a storm sewer issue using COVID-19 relief dollars. Meeting in regular session last week, the Sidney City Council discussed and approved the use of American Rescue Plan Act dollars to address a storm sewer issue on Douglas Street. Mayor Peter Johnson tells KMA News persistent heavy rainfall over the past couple months, has exposed an issue on a specific part of Douglas Street on the South side of Sidney involving a steep incline.

Sidney council holds multiple public hearings

(Sidney) -- The city of Sidney held a pair of public hearings regarding children safety, and updating housing codes. Meeting in regular session Monday, the Sidney City Council held public hearings on "no parking" signage for Fletcher Street, and also for a policy update in the city's housing code. Mayor Peter Johnson tells KMA News, Fletcher Street runs along the North side of the Sidney Elementary School by the school playground. Johnson says the Sidney Community School District has approached the city about the safety of their elementary students.

Park Project Gains Ground

The Sidney City Council okayed a path in the Sept. 28 council meeting for the Sidney Park Project to apply for more grants. The council was presented with a resolution requesting approval of a letter of development as required by the Nebraska Game and Parks to apply for the Land and Water Conservation Fund Application for this year. Madi Wilkinson, president of the Sidney Park Project board, explained to the council the resolution is part of the grant process for Nebraska Game and Parks.

Council welcomes next Sidney city manager

SIDNEY — The city of Sidney’s next city manager, Andrew Bowsher, was introduced to the Sidney City Council during its Monday evening meeting. Bowsher was in attendance and thanked City Council for the opportunity immediately after it had adopted the resolution appointing him to be the next city manager of the city of Sidney. His new position will become effective on Nov. 6, 2021. The appointment comes upon the retirement of current City Manager Mark Cundiff in November.

Zoning code review wraps-up

SIDNEY — The third part of the final draft of the newly revised Sidney Zoning Code was reviewed at the Monday evening Sidney Planning Commission meeting. City staff has been working with consultant, ZoneCo Inc., to simplify and rewrite the code since November 2019. Community Development Director Barbara Dulworth presented commission members with the first part of the final draft at the July meeting. It was reviewed in three stages, with the last four chapters of the final draft presented Monday.
