Tigers' bullpen bounces back in 4-3 win vs. Rays, Derek Hill's injury status unclear

St. Petersburg, Fla. — Manager AJ Hinch said his ballclub wouldn’t sulk, sag or pout after blowing a three-run lead in the ninth Friday night and getting walked-off. He wasn’t lying. The Tigers came smoking out of the gates Saturday against Rays lefty Ryan Yarbrough. Jeimer Candelario blasted a two-out,...

Rays' Yandy Diaz: Keys comeback with clutch hitting

Diaz entered Friday's extra-inning win over the Tigers as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth and delivered a two-run single in his only at-bat. Diaz's timely knock plated Manuel Margot and Francisco Mejia to close the Rays' deficit to 4-3 at the time. The 29-year-old's clutch hitting was an extension of a favorable September pattern, as he's now driven in multiple runs on three occasions during the month on his way to 11 RBI over 13 games.

After winning the series-opening game last night, the Rays look to try and take at least two in this four-game series against the Detroit Tigers. Rays 3 Tigers 4: No magic today

Today’s game looked like it was following a familiar, happy script. The team got down early (4-0 after two, more on that in a bit). But after the second inning the pitching shut the door, the defense was good as usual, and the hitters started chipping away at the lead. With at least some baserunners every inning, and even two on with none out in the bottom of the ninth, it felt like it was just a matter of time before the Rays would get that long ball, or piece together those hits to pull ahead.

Tigers stung in ninth, fall to Rays in extras

The Tigers and Rays have faced each other enough times over the last week or so that pitchers and hitters have seen each other multiple times. But their latest matchup Friday night had the kind of surprise ending that has been rare for the Tigers this year, but all too familiar for the Rays.

Alexander shows grit, growth in loss to Rays

The dry wit from Tigers starter Tyler Alexander punctuated his frustration with himself after Thursday’s 5-2 loss to the Rays at Tropicana Field. “Everybody’s game plan against me is [to] swing early because I throw strikes, so I kept my pitch count down,” he deadpanned. “I’ve been mixing in the occasional uncompetitive walk, or at least a couple of them. I'm going to try to lock that up.”
