Saddle up: Old West Fest rides again

Telluride offers a festival devoted to automotive horsepower this weekend. If you want the real thing, come to Ridgway. Today (Friday) through Sunday, the Ridgway Old West Fest celebrates the feisty, irrepressible spirit personified by actor John Wayne in his star turn as crusty, big-hearted U.S. Marshal J. “Rooster” Cogburn in the film “True Grit,” filmed in downtown Ridgway and the surrounding countryside.

More than century old Buffalo Bill poster uncovered in Manistee

MANISTEE — What started out as a routine siding job ended up offering a glimpse into the Old West. As Jesse VanderBie, of Jack VanderBie Builder, LLC, was removing siding on a building located on 22nd Street last week, he began to uncover something special. As more siding was removed, the crew revealed a poster for Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World Show, which dates back to the 1800s.

The Pepperbox Pistol Makes History as the First True Old West Revolver

One of my favorite blackpowder pistols is extraordinarily difficult to shoot. In fact, it is often difficult to hit anything with it at any great distance at all. It is cumbersome, clunky and unwieldy, and it is the oddest-looking contraption a person will ever lay eyes on. That’s because it is a Classic Arms replica of the Ethan Allen pistol, the Pepperbox revolver in .36 caliber.

Sesame Street’s Old West Sketches Are the Best Westerns Ever Made

When it comes to movie genres, I try to be open-minded. I’m aware that there are good movies in every genre, from horror to sci-fi to historical culinary romantic tragicomedy. And yet, for some reason, I always feel a twinge of uncertainty when I think about watching Westerns. I’m aware...
