Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America (OSDIA) is the “largest and oldest national organization for men and women of Italian heritage in the United States.” Our organization includes the Commission for Social Justice (CSJ) as its anti-defamation arm. Recognizing the need to fight negative stereotyping of Italian Americans, CSJ was founded in 1979 and interacts with groups to promote and safeguard their culture, race and religion with dignity and respect.

He's Spent 11 Years Advocating for Nebraska's Largest Minority, Now Lazaro Arturo Spindola is Ready to Pass the Torch

Every morning for the last 11 years, Lazaro Arturo Spindola, wakes up at 5:30 a.m. in his Columbus home and drives for over an hour to the Nebraska State Capitol. There, he serves as the executive director of the Nebraska Commission on Latino-Americans. He's retiring from the role on Dec. 31, 2021. It’s the latest stop in his life that started in Cuba, then to Venezuela as a trauma surgeon, and to Columbus, Nebraska as minority health coordinator.

'They were teaching us to be servants, not doctors': Panelists discuss Genoa School

As research continues on the Genoa Indian boarding school, descendants of those who attended are sharing their ancestor’s stories about what the school was really like.. On Nov. 11, a panel was held at the Center For Great Plains Studies to discuss the story of the Genoa Indian boarding school as well as the lasting impact of the school, where Native American children were often sent to assimilate into American society.

Those same styles of boarding schools also existed here in Nebraska, and a University-led research project has been working for years now to make sure that history is never forgotten. It’s a piece of Nebraska history that most Nebraskans don’t know.
