There Is Nowhere Damon Albarn Can’t Create From

This year, Damon Albarn — architect of Blur, Gorillaz, and a constellation of operas, side projects, supergroups, and solo albums — officially became a citizen of Iceland, a nation he’d visited many times over the years. The singer-songwriter made a name for himself in the ’90s on records like Blur’s Parklife and The Great Escape, both lively rock albums that doubled as smart surveys of a certain dour, uniquely English temperament. The records he has made since then tend to defer to other voices and players and genres. Gorillaz albums over the past 20 years have been tapestries weaving rockers, rappers, and others into unpredictable psychedelic sound sculptures. Projects like the Good, the Bad, and the Queen — featuring the frequent Albarn collaborators Simon Tong of the Verve, Paul Simonon of the Clash, and the late Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen — search for delicate musical multiculturalism in their blend and balance of international rhythms.

UKNY for November 21

London's Nilüfer Yanya released her debut album, Miss Universe, in 2019 and the Feeling Lucky? EP in late 2020 and a remix EP too. This month she's dropped an early hint of what's to come on her second album, Painless, due on March 4, 2022. On "UKNY" tonight at 11 p.m., the first single from that forthcoming release — and like many of Yanya's songs, it's a tough stance on survival in an often unkind world.

Damon Albarn: The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows

Before the world stopped, Damon Albarn set up and recorded an orchestral piece inspired by the landscapes of Iceland. Some point during lockdown, however, the plan changed. Instead of a purely orchestral piece, Albarn turned these movements into his second solo record. Thus, we have been presented with The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows. The artistic vision may have changed rather drastically, but Albarn made sure to stick to the concept. With such elegant instrumentations backing Albarn’s songwriting, The Nearer the Fountain should be an easy slam-dunk, but a good chunk of the album is spent wading in waist-deep ideas, which is made even more frustrating considering the limitless potential this project has.

Damon Albarn – The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows★★★☆☆Is there any artist today quite so restless as Damon Albarn? We’ve witnessed his swaggering Blur frontman; his lascivious cartoon persona in Gorillaz; his melancholic lonely boy on debut solo record, Everyday Robots. On his latest project, though, the 53-year-old proves he still has plenty of unexplored ground to cover. Inspired by Iceland, where Albarn first visited 25 years ago, The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows uses blooping synths and sullen piano notes to create its own wintry vistas. Albarn, his doleful voice here recalling...

Damon Albarn’s ‘The Nearer the Fountain’ Is a Beautiful Album

The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows — that sounds like a pretentious mouthful for an album title, doesn’t it? It’s not just the title of Damon Albarn‘s new LP, it’s also the name of the first song and a repeated mantra throughout the album’s lyrics. Spend enough time with the record, and you’ll find the title growing less pompous by the second. The Blur and Gorillaz frontman has always had a special knack for songwriting that exceeded his ability to jot down Britpop hits. Whenever I get reacquainted with one of Albarn’s many projects, I find myself thinking, “Really, did no one think of this melody/cadence/arrangement/lyrical combination before now?” The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows is no different. It may be more mellow and less pop than Albarn’s last solo album, Everyday Robots, but it still delivers in all the ways that count.
