Dustin Garneau homered and drove in two runs, rookie Matt Manning combined with the bullpen on a three-hitter and the Detroit Tigers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1 on Wednesday to complete a two-game sweep. Milwaukee’s magic number to clinch the NL Central remained at five after they dropped a pair to the Tigers following a five-game winning streak. The Brewers were limited to seven hits in the series, and Lorenzo Cain’s RBI double in the second inning was the only extra-base hit.

Rays Minor League Baseball Road Trip: A guide to North Carolina — Game 7

In an earlier DraysBay blog post, I introduced the Bowling Green Hot Rods as the High-A class affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays in the High-A East League of MLB’s new Professional Development League. Up to this point in the 2021 season, the Hot Rods have traveled twice to North Carolina, which is the home of Tampa’s AAA team—the Durham Bulls. Both times they played a series of games versus another member of the South Division of that league. My earlier post for SBNation’s Tampa Bay Rays blog highlighted a game Bowling Green played against the Hickory Crawdads (Texas Rangers) in late June.

Lorenzo Cain homered for the second straight night and drove in three runs, Jace Peterson punched a tiebreaking single to left field with two strikes and two outs in the seventh inning and Milwaukee knocked San Francisco out of first place with a flurry of bullpen arms, 5-2 on Wednesday at Oracle Park.

Rowdy Tellez hit a three-run home run, Aaron Ashby recorded his first major league win, and the Brewers muscled their way out of a three-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Luis Urías also homered and Kolten Wong hit a two-run double for the Brewers, whose first seven hits went for extra bases to keep the many Milwaukee fans among the crowd of 26,186 cheering consistently. Christian Yelich, who went 2 for 4 with a walk, had Milwaukee’s first single in the seventh inning.
