NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs, Sabres, Stars, Blue Jackets, Blackhawks

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli lists three options for the Toronto Maple Leafs after this rough start to the 2021-22 NHL season. Meanwhile, two NHL insiders look at the teams rumored to be in the Jack Eichel trade conversations. Initial reports about what John Klingberg is looking for on an extension might be conservative and there appear to be big organizational changes coming to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Struggling Chicago Blackhawks put Jonathan Toews on COVID-19 list

As if things couldn't go worse for the Chicago Blackhawks to start the season, now they're being hammered by COVID-19. Captain Jonathan Toews and fellow forward Henrik Borgstrom are the latest players to be added to the COVID protocols list Tuesday. They follow Patrick Kane, Riley Stillman and Jujhar Khaira,...

Are the Maple Leafs a total disaster?

Seven games played (and I use that term loosely), with: 13 GF and 23 GA for the third worst goal differential in the NHL. They have two wins, for a percentage of .357, which is just inside the bottom ten teams. Somehow Ottawa and Montréal have been worse, so they are sixth in the Atlantic.

Leafs Report Cards: Another “lesson” for the Maple Leafs in loss to Carolina

Sometimes diving deeper into the data doesn’t help me arrive at a better understanding of this sport. After watching Toronto’s 4-1 loss last night, I started digging into every stat I could find to help explain what’s happening with this team right now. Then I rewatched some video hoping it would help.

Mailbag: Maple Leafs due for turnaround, Gibson's future with Ducks

Here is the Oct. 27 edition of the mailbag, where we answer your questions asked on Twitter using #OvertheBoards. Tweet your questions to @drosennhl. Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal [were] sixth, seventh and eighth in the Atlantic Division. Is this a sign of things to come? Will any of them get out of the basement in their division? -- @theashcity.

Blackhawks' Jonathan Toews, Henrik Borgstrom Enter NHL's COVID-19 Protocols

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews and forward Henrik Borgstrom have entered COVID-19 protocols and will not practice Tuesday, the team announced. It's unclear if either player will be available for Wednesday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs at United Center. Chicago now has five players in COVID-19 protocols. Patrick Kane,...

NHL Insider Says Maple Leafs Have Three Options After Lousy Start

When the plan isn’t working, the logical next step is to change course. In Toronto, the sky is apparently falling when it comes to the Toronto Maple Leafs and their 2-4-1 start and changing course could mean a couple of things. After a horrid opening to the 2021-22 season where the best players on the team haven’t shown up and there are serious questions about whether or not this roster as constructed has what it takes to get into and through the playoffs, fans, insiders, and likely the players wondering what comes next.

The Space Needle to Climate Pledge Arena, Jared McCann enjoys all Seattle has to offer

It’s by no means an official title, but becoming a part-time Seattle tour guide is certainly befitting Jared McCann. On a recent day after the Seattle Kraken’s first NHL home opener, the affable 25-year-old forward was up early, plans already made, to take his parents, Matt and Erin McCann, out for some sightseeing around the city he now calls home.

Spezza: Maple Leafs not a 'fragile group'

Toronto Maple Leafs veteran Jason Spezza doesn't believe that his team will crack easily amid an early-season slump. "I think for every team that hasn't won, there is a fragile aspect to them. That word has been used by a lot of people, but I don't think we're a fragile group," Spezza said Tuesday, according to The Hockey News' David Alter. "But I think we're a group that is still trying to find their consistency and find our way. We know what a good game feels like; we just haven't been able to do it here recently."

Maple Leafs Are Not in the Same League as Contenders

Since the schedule was released, I had Monday’s game between the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Carolina Hurricanes circled on the calendar. Of course, Frederik Andersen against his old team was one reason, but I was curious to see how Toronto would match up against one of the best teams from last season. This was before before the dreadful start to the 2021-22 season, when hopes were still high. Unfortunately, if the last two weeks weren’t enough, or the debacle in Pittsburgh, it’s now clear the Maple Leafs are not even close to being good enough to compete with the NHL elite.
