An Omaha man received serious injuries in a collision that occurred in O'Brien County. A Mount Pleasant man was killed in a two-vehicle collision Wednesday. According to the Iowa State Patrol, shortly before 3p.m, 68-year-old Norman Hirschy was driving eastbound in the 2500 block of 260th St. near New London when his 2000 Toyota Tacoma crossed the centerline colliding with a 2006 Toyota Tundra driven by 57-year-old Sheila Wilkerson of New London. Hirschy was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Wilkerson was injured in the collision and transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by air. The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the New London Police Department, the New London Fire Department, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, the Henry County Ambulance Service, Henry County Medical Examiner, and Olson-Powell Funeral Chapel. Listed as stolen property was a blue 3-ton Speedy Lift jack, valued at $200, reported taken from a residence in the 1700 block of Broadway in Denison. The property was recovered.
Several patients are being treated at the University of Iowa Health Hospitals & Clinics for injuries following an explosion and fire at a Marengo plant, about 80 miles east of Des Moines. The Iowa State Patrol told KCCI that the explosion occurred around 11:20 a.m. Thursday. Many agencies respond within a 30-50 mile radius. The first priority is to answer the people inside the plant, some of whom sustained injuries. Some injuries are related to burns. The state patrol tells KCCI that preliminary findings indicate that about 30 people were at the plant. All those people have been recorded. UI Hospitals & Clinics said they are treating 10-15 patients in the outbreak. They could not comment on specific conditions, but said most were in the minor to moderate category. Most patients are treated for burns and trauma. Immediate family members of patients can contact the hospital at 319-356-1616. The fire is still burning and crews are using foam and water to put it out. The state Fire Marshal is on site trying to find a cause. Marengo residents in an eight-block radius were evacuated from their homes, but have since been allowed to return. They are on standby to pick up people if needed. 1:15 pm KCCI’s Beau Bowman has arrived on the scene in Marengo. While keeping a safe distance from the investigation, KCCI is working to confirm new information about the explosion and whether anyone was hurt. 1:20 pm The University of Iowa Health Hospitals & Clinics said it received multiple patients after the explosion Staff members say they expect others may be on the route. At this time, UIHC says doctors are assessing the severity of the injuries and working to ensure all patients receive the care they need. 1:40 pm KCCI confirms the burning building is owned by Heartland Crush LLC, according to the Iowa County coroner.1:45 pm The Iowa Valley Community School District tells students and staff at KCCI in Marengo are being advised not to go outside due to air quality concerns. There are currently no changes to student pickup or after-school activities. 3:50 pm UIHC has confirmed that 10-15 patients are being cared for in the outbreak. Most patients are treated for burns and trauma. Most patients are in minor to moderate condition. 8:26 pm Residents in an eight-block radius who were evacuated are being allowed to return home. (Fayette County, IA) -- The Iowa State Patrol says two people are hospitalized with serious injuries after a head-on crash in northeast Iowa Monday. The ISP says the crash happened north of Sumner when the driver of a pickup lost control of the vehicle on icy roads and hit a semi truck. There were two people inside the pickup, both of whom were taken to an area hospital in serious condition. The driver of the semi was not hurt. So far, the names of those involved have not been released. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
