Takeover of Fulton elections considered by Georgia Republicans

With a rising drumbeat of criticism, several Republican Georgia legislators are building a case for the state government to take over Fulton County elections. The newfound power to fire local elections management, created by Georgia’s voting law, worries voting rights advocates, who say it could be abused for partisan purposes to tamper with the heavily Democratic county.

Gov. DeWine says he lacks authority to mandate masks in schools

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Gov. Mike DeWine sounded the alarm Monday over disturbing numbers on COVID-19 and vaccines in Ohio as the start of a new school year draws near. During a news conference at the Statehouse, DeWine shared that over 99% of COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations in the state in 2021 have been from unvaccinated people. He spoke hours after Ohio’s chief medical officer recommended that unvaccinated students and staff members wear masks in schools.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia plans to invest millions into upgrading air quality systems in public schools with help from American Rescue Plan funding. $250 million would come from American Rescue Plan aid allocated to the state, and a matching $250 million will come from American Rescue Plan and other relief funding distributed to local governments (about $939 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) II funds went out to local school divisions this January and $1.9 billion was allocated to school divisions via the American Rescue Plan Act ESSER III).
