The Scene, Aug. 2: Charity events in Greater Akron

The Barberton Rotary Annual Golf Outing: Friday at the Chippewa Golf Course, 12147 Shank Road, Doylestown. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a 9 a.m. start. The cost is $100 per golfer, $40 of which is tax-deductible. Registration includes the golf and cart, breakfast, soft drinks and beer, lunch at the turn and dinner following the round. There will be course games, skins game, 50/50 and a raffle for golf prizes. Mail registration and checks payable to the Barberton Rotary Foundation, Box 572, Barberton, OH 44203. AKRON, Ohio — Kimmy Henderson believes that art has the power to make a change. She is an art activist who focuses on raising awareness about mental health. "Sometimes it helps people express things that they can’t otherwise in words,” Henderson said. "You can express emotion and feeling in art and you can reach someone on a different level than just reading text or speaking language.”

Walsh University offering free tuition to returning students and students vaccinated against COVID-19

NORTH CANTON – Walsh University students who are vaccinated against COVID-19 will have extra chances to win free tutition compared to their unvaccinated peers. The university, which has an enrollment of roughly 2,650, plans to award 31 scholarships as well as tickets to local attractions in three separate lottery-style giveaways. One giveaway is for only students who are vaccinated against COVID-19.
