Texas vs. Colorado score: After injury to QB Sam Ehlinger, Longhorns freshmen turn heads in Alamo Bowl rout

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger's evening was cut short in the Alamo Bowl. Now the question is whether his collegiate career is over, too. The senior did not suit up for the second half of Tuesday's 55-23 rout over Colorado because of a shoulder injury he suffered in the first half. Ehlinger was seen in street clothes and a sling after halftime. Though Ehlinger did take a couple of sacks, he had a solid first half with 160 yards passing and a touchdown.

Bevo’s Daily Roundup: Texas HC Tom Herman says ‘nobody surprised’ at QB Casey Thompson’s Alamo Bowl performance

Texas Longhorns head coach saw it coming when sophomore quarterback Casey Thompson stepped in for an injured Sam Ehlinger, only to completely dominate. Per the Dallas Morning News, Herman said, “Really, really proud of him. We knew at halftime that there was a strong possibility he was going to have to finish the game for us. Thought Mike Yurcich called a great second half for him, some max protection. This was a very, very complicated, complex, disruptive defense that we were playing. I thought Mike simplified the game for Casey, and Casey and his receivers delivered.” Herman continued, “I mean, nobody was surprised. Maybe all of you were because he hasn’t played a whole lot. But we’ve seen him in practice for three years. None of us were surprised.”

Youth movement leads No. 20 Texas to a 55-23 blowout of Colorado

Here’s the final riddle of 2020 — what should one make of a No. 20 Texas Longhorns team that was down, at the count of head coach Tom Herman, 18 members of this year’s initial depth chart, including six and then eventually seven team captains, pulling off yet another bowl win against a Colorado Buffaloes team that had less than 50 available scholarship players?

Shoulder injury ends Alamo Bowl for Texas QB Sam Ehlinger

SAN ANTONIO — Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger suffered a shoulder injury in the first half of Tuesday’s 55-23 Alamo Bowl win over Colorado and didn't return to the game. Sophomore Casey Thompson started the third quarter of a game the Longhorns led at halftime, 17-10. It's unclear when the injury to Ehlinger occurred, but school officials announced as Texas was coming out of the locker room for the start of the second half that Ehlinger had played his final snap of the night. Ehlinger had a 10-for-16 passing performance in the first half of his 46th career game and 43rd start for the Longhorns, throwing for 160 yards and a touchdown (a 14-yard screen pass to Bijan Robinson in the first quarter).

The Best and Worst Things in Texas College Football This Season

It was a college football season we won’t soon forget. Even if many of us might like to. Because of COVID-19, the action started with a slew of aborted matchups, including the USC-Alabama opener that was to be played in Arlington, along with nonconference games like Houston-Rice, Texas-LSU, and Texas A&M–Colorado. Most teams managed to complete some kind of schedule, with cancellations and postponements right up to the end, including what was supposed to be the first bowl game of the season, the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl. This intended all-Texas affair between SMU and UTSA, set in the exotic winter vacation spot of Collin County, just wasn’t meant to be. Not that anybody needed a bowl game on December 19, given that there were still regular season games that day.

Texas Football: 3 remaining 2021 QB targets after Early Signing Period

Adding more talent and depth at the quarterback position in the 2021 Texas football recruiting class will be slim pickings ahead of NSD. One of the most notable remaining areas of need for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class, if there’s any way that fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and first-year offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich can address it, is at quarterback. Texas didn’t have any sort of good fortune in the months leading up to the Early Signing Period at the quarterback position in either their 2021 or 2022 classes.
