‘Tell Me Your Secrets’ Review: Lily Rabe’s Talent Is Wasted in Amazon Crime Drama

There’s a moment right around the midway point of Amazon Prime Video’s new crime drama, “Tell Me Your Secrets,” where two characters just scream into their phones. That’s how you’ll feel throughout the entire 10-episode run of the show — that what you’re watching is just a lot of screaming and crying with very little to show for it. This is weird, because the series is packed to bursting with storylines, all of which, on their own, could make a better series than the goulash equivalent we’re handed.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Tell Me Your Secrets’ On Amazon Prime Video, Where 3 People Face Their Dark Secrets While A Girl Is Still Missing

Tell Me Your Secrets has had a roundabout path to finally seeing the light of day on Prime Video. Developed by TNT under the title Deadlier Than The Male, it shot its entire season 3 years ago, but Turner ended up scrapping the entire project. Amazon picked it up last fall; it makes sense they would, given the fact that Amy Brenneman, Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater are the show’s stars. But did Turner have a good reason to scrap the project? Read on for more.

Tell Me Your Secrets should keep its secrets to itself

Like its main characters, Tell Me Your Secrets has a mysterious backstory. It’s been sitting on the shelf for a few years, after TNT decided to cancel it after the entire first season had been shot. Brett Weitz, general manager of TNT, TBS, and TruTV, said that it “wasn’t right” for TNT. But the ready-made thriller series starring TV vet Amy Brenneman and real-life couple Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater apparently found a second wind (Rabe’s stellar turn in the recent HBO limited series The Undoing probably didn’t hurt). Now the series, created by Call The Midwife’s Harriet Warner, is being released en masse on Prime Video.

Amazon's Tell Me Your Secrets Is an Addictive, Cockamamie Crime Binge

There has been a resurgence of a TV genre Lifetime perfected decades ago: the pulpy crime thriller. But now these series and their terrible wigs are ending up on more “prestigious” networks with recognizable names attached, masquerading as something more elevated. Shows like HBO’s The Undoing and now Amazon’s Tell Me Your Secrets are ultimately just beach reads translated into TV (Netflix is also full of them as well under the “crime” category.) Frankly, I don’t really care what they’re called, I’m just happy to see them back in all of their cockamamie glory.

Tell Me Your Secrets: Grade the Premiere of Amazon's Dark Thriller

The opening moments of Tell Me Your Secrets, Amazon’s new thriller starring Lily Rabe (The Undoing) and Amy Brenneman (The Leftovers), set up everything you need to know about the series: Rabe’s Karen can’t remember whether or not she took part in murders perpetrated by her serial killer boyfriend, and Brenneman’s Mary refuses to believe that Karen doesn’t know something about the mysterious disappearance of her daughter, Theresa.

‘Tell Me Your Secrets’ Cast Breaks Down the Villains and Victims of Amazon Thriller

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Tell Me Your Secrets,” streaming now on Amazon Prime Video. When first meeting the trio of characters at the center of Amazon Prime Video’s “Tell Me Your Secrets,” it may be easy for some audience members to make assumptions about who they are and how their stories will unfold. Emma (Lily Rabe) is in prison for crimes not immediately known to the audience or fully understood to her, given the gaps in her memory; Mary (Amy Brenneman) sits down behind a plexiglass window to plead for answers about Emma’s part in her daughter Theresa’s (Stella Baker) disappearance; and John (Hamish Linklater) comes to Mary to ask her for a job in her foundation, which fights for missing and exploited young women, claiming that he is in recovery from being a predator himself. But as the 10-episode season of Harriet Warner’s dramatic thriller unfolds no one is left without both their light and shadow sides exposed — including the missing woman at the center of it all.

Tell Me Your Secrets | Review

Overwrought, overlong, and morally dubious, Tell Me Your Secrets is a forced, sleazy thriller with all the ridiculousness and depth of a daytime soap opera. It’s a series that so desperately wants to appear edgy, serious, and boundary pushing that it forgets almost any sense of craft and intelligence. If I’m wrong that series creator Harriet Warner’s show is meant to be taken seriously, and Tell Me Your Secrets is secretly a work of high camp, that’s even worse. Even on a “so bad it’s good” level, Tell Me Your Secrets is too nasty, morally repugnant, and painfully convoluted for this to be any fun. It fails to thrill. It fails to move. It fails to be ironically watchable. It fails to even induce anger outside of how shockingly bad it is. It just plain fails.

Emma (Lily Rabe), once named Karen Miller and in love with a serial killer, definitely isn't; neither is Mary (Amy Brenneman), the grieving, lonely mother desperate for answers about her daughter's disappearance. With each episode of the Amazon Prime miniseries, we're introduced to both new characters and new sides to the ones we've already met.

In A Way, Tell Me Your Secrets Is Based On Countless True Stories

Warning: There are slight spoilers ahead for Tell Me Your Secrets. Tell Me Your Secrets doesn’t just tell one story. There are so many overlapping plotlines and morally dubious characters that sometimes, watching the Prime Video series feels like jumping between multiple thrilling, terrifying TV shows. But along with the obvious themes (like suspicion and, well, murder), the show’s biggest through-line is the truth: what it means, what we’re willing to give up in order to find it, what we’re willing to trust.
