Madisonville, Kentucky Songwriter’s Band, Nashvillains, Release Video for New Single ‘There to Catch Me’

If you've been to the annual Sandy Lee Watkins Songwriters Festival in Henderson the past few years, the name Scott Lindsey should ring a bell. The Madisonville singer-songwriter has been a regular performer at the fundraising event for a number of years, including this year when he brought along his bandmates, Troy Johnson and Brett Boyett, collectively known as Nashvillains, to perform as well. The group joined us during our live broadcast from Audubon Mills Park on the Friday morning of the festival weekend where they treated us to a couple of live, acoustic performances. By the looks of it, they've been hard at work since the festival wrapped in late July, releasing a video for their new single, "There to Catch Me."

The CRB posted the rate proposals for the term, also known as PHONORECORDS IV, yesterday, recommending lower rates, mathematically speaking, than any of the yearly figures set by the CRB PHONORECORDS III determination that covers 2018–2022. That rate is now under an APPEALS COURT remand and it is unsure whether it will stand.

Streaming Services Propose New Royalty Rates for Songwriters and Publishers

Spotify, Amazon and Pandora are proposing lower rates for publishers and songwriters for the period spanning 2023–2027 than any year since 2018. On Thursday (Oct 21), the CRB posted the digital music services' rate proposals for the term, also known as Phonorecords IV, and those streamers are recommending lower rates, mathematically speaking, than any of the yearly figures set by the CRB Phonorecords III determination that covers 2018–2022. Streaming platforms suggest lower payout rates to songwriters

Music streaming now accounts for the majority of music reproduced around the world. Undoubtedly, songwriters turn to streaming platforms to make a certain, if not the majority, of their income. Music streaming services including Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Pandora, and Google have all filed documents with the US Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) suggesting new royalty payout rates for artists. Unfortunately, it’s not good news.

Rodney Crowell's excellent advice for aspiring songwriters

Rodney Crowell has a new album, and it's the most personal set of songs of his lengthy career. Entitled Triage, it tackles the theme of universal love. During an era when people are divided on so many fronts, Crowell is interested in how to be a better steward to everyone — and if anyone's up to the task, well, Rodney's a good guy to have with the olive branch.

Cognitive Dissonance: Squaring Booming Industry Revenues & Valuing Songwriters (Guest Column)

As filings to the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) become public in the next few days, a more informed conversation about future rates paid to music publishers will begin. As we start to assess the potential impact of the various rate proposals, my hope is that we can look beyond rhetoric of songwriters versus streaming services. That framing does very little to achieve positive long-term results for anyone within the industry.
