A DIY Man Stored Solar Power on His Roof. With a Water Battery?

Here's a sobering reminder: California produces so much solar power it has to basically pay other states to take it. While some of that is due to existing power company contracts, if California had adequate energy storage, many of the state's electricity difficulties would be resolved fairly fast. While solar energy is the most abundant energy we have, we aren't able to make the most of it, simply because we don't yet have the means to store it efficiently.

Thermal Solar Goes Where PVs Can’t

Global solar energy supplies are growing rapidly, with nearly 10 times as much solar capacity installed today as there was a decade ago. Leading the boom is the photovoltaic (PV) panel, which converts sunlight into electricity using semiconductors. But even as the glossy rectangles become increasingly cheaper and ubiquitous, solar PV alone can't solve the nagging question: What to do when the sun isn't shining? As electric utilities and policymakers seek solutions for storing and dispatching energy on demand, concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) is once again gaining traction.

Opinion: Cambodia can secure reliable electricity without new coal

Over half of Cambodia’s electricity is generated in coal power plants, almost all built with Chinese involvement. Coal’s share in the energy mix was set to increase to three-quarters by 2030. Then came President Xi Jinping’s September announcement that China “will not build new coal-fired power projects abroad” and will step up support for green energy. The new stance may help Cambodia transition toward a more reliable and affordable electricity system, at a time when the country needs a green economic boost given Covid-19. It can also help Cambodia retain its largest industry, garments and footwear. Major international brands operating in the country have made requests for a cleaner energy grid.
