Shares of SoFi Technologies Inc. are surging Wednesday after the financial-technology company said that it won regulatory approval to become a bank-holding company. The company announced late Tuesday that it won approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Reserve for its plans to become a national bank by acquiring Golden Pacific Bancorp Inc., a small community bank, and operating a bank subsidiary.

SoFi Receives Regulatory Approval to Become a National Bank

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SoFi Technologies, Inc. (“SoFi”), the digital personal finance company, today announced that the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the Federal Reserve have approved its applications to become a Bank Holding Company through its proposed acquisition of Golden Pacific Bancorp, Inc., and operate its bank subsidiary as SoFi Bank, National Association. SoFi expects the acquisition to close in February, subject to completion or waiver of the remaining customary closing conditions.

SoFi scores conditional approval for bank charter from US regulator

Personal finance company SoFi has won conditional approval in its bid to create a nationally chartered bank. SoFi Bank's conditional approval was announced late Tuesday by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). In a statement, the OCC said that it "conditionally approved applications from Social Finance Inc. (SoFi) to create SoFi Bank, National Association (SoFi Bank, N.A.), as a full service national bank headquartered in Cottonwood Heights, Utah."
