College football recruiting season is in full swing with official visits for the 2022 class starting earlier this month. McQueen High's Ashton Hayes committed to Nebraska after his official visit to Lincoln. Hayes is one of the highest-ranked football prospects in Northern Nevada history. Since Scout.com (now 247Sports) was founded at the turn of the century, 28 local players have received a recruiting grade of at least 0.8000 (out of 1.000). California American Legion Girl’s State perseveres in Nevada County

The 77th American Legion Auxiliary California Girl’s State Conference was in full swing in March of 2020 all set to welcome more than 500 high school junior girls from all over California to the campus of Claremont McKenna college for a week-long endeavor of learning about our state’s government system. These girls, being the only ones selected from their perspective high schools, would have been broken in the four counties of Brown, Dorsey, McMahon and Marshall and each county broken into five cities. The girls in each city would have been housed together in a dorm at the college arriving as strangers but leaving as the best of friends.

Public colleges and universities under fire for promoting controversial education loans

Public colleges and universities are facing criticism from consumer advocates for advertising high-cost private loans to students in nondegree programs. A report being released Friday by the Student Borrower Protection Center (SBPC) accuses schools, such as Virginia Tech and Indiana University, of promoting specialty finance companies that can charge double-digit interest for loans with opaque terms. The advocacy group, founded by former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau official Seth Frotman, says colleges could be violating federal rules by failing to disclose arrangements with the lenders.
