Smoked meats, sandwiches and more inspired by Texas- and Kansas City-style barbecue reign at a fast-casual “Q” destination that debuted in June in St. Louis’ Tower Grove East neighborhood: Navin’s BBQ. The eatery, which occupies Guerrilla Street Food’s previous space, comes from owner and pitmaster Chris Armstrong, who “grew up...

My Stay At The Shinola Hotel in Detroit

Earlier this year, I celebrated my birthday at The Shinola Hotel in Downtown Detroit, Michigan. I had been wanting to stay there since they opened and I figured my birthday was the best excuse to splurge on a room. Although I live in New York City now, almost all of my family lives right outside of Detroit, so I never have the need to get a hotel while I’m there. But whether you live in the area or you’re going for a visit, let me tell you… The Shinola is worth it! I even did my whole birthday photoshoot in the room, so be sure to check that out in my post, “27 Things To Do While I’m 27”.

Everyday Carry: Hot Lap

For most people, driving is a necessity — and not one they give much thought to. For these people, their cars are meant for transportation only, owned exclusively to get them from place to place. Even people that proudly drive high-end luxury vehicles (like supercars), which are undeniably for appearance’s sake (at least to some degree) often use them solely to get to and from work, the grocery store, the gym, etc. However, as we all know, there’s another class of people for whom driving is an activity entirely its own. For these folks, getting behind the wheel is a treat, a privilege, and a tremendous source of joy. Feeling the connection between your body, your vehicle, and the road below is, put in overly simplified terms, unlike anything else short of thrill-seeking activities like skydiving and riding on roller coasters. It’s with these people in mind, those of us with petrol flowing through our veins, that we’ve created this week’s driver-focused everyday carry loadout.

For so long during the Great Lockdown(s) due to the coronavirus pandemic, our commute to work has been from the bed to the kitchen table and back. If we left our beds at all . . . But now we seem to be approaching a New Normal, in which even hybrid working arrangements require a commute to the office. Under such circumstances, whither the Man Bag? Whatever that may look like, and for as long as it lasts.

An Intimate, Greenery-Filled Wedding at the Couple's Michigan Farm

For Alena Kaufman and Andrew Bowman, it all started with a cheese board. In 2013, the couple met at an event Alena organized in the Hudson Valley and shared a charcuterie meet-cute. Since Alena was in “work mode,” she says it wasn’t until their second run-in that sparks really flew. In 2018, five years after they met, Andrew popped the question during a mid-week lunch date. (Yes, he even prepared well-stocked cheese and charcuterie plates.)

Shinola Mixes Leather and Wood for Its First Foray into Homeware

Born in Detroit, Shinola has travelled from watches and bikes to a new furniture collection fresh for the market. In keeping with its desire to build back the forgotten industrial past of cities like Detroit, the brand has arrived with a collection as far from the readily accessible Scandi look as you could hope for. Solid, heavy, and built for the long haul, the combination of chairs, tables, desks, sofas, lamps, and beds are big on wood and leather.

A Couple Sea Creatures Inspired Movie Nights

The Boneyard has seen a lot of events pass through the back door this summer (and a Mickey’s truck. That’s a story for another time). This time, we decided to transform it once again. And what better way to do it than with movies? They’re pretty great. We even have a whole issue dedicated to them coming up later this year. So if you couldn’t tell already, we really like them. This summer, we decided to share the love a bit and put on a Movie Night Series with our great friends over at Shinola. They’re some pretty rad people doing some damn good stuff for the world. We even made a watch with them. You should check that out too. But back to the movies. In our little slice of Montauk/heaven, The Boneyard, the Sea Creatures Movie Night Series took place. With our friends from Purple, we gave out some super comfortable seat cushions to everyone who showed up. Think Zaida might’ve snuck off with one for herself. We’ll let it slide this time. Even gave away a full mattress. That’s worth a lot of bananas.
