In less than 24 hours, the New York Yankees have added a pair of proven left-handed hitters, bringing much-needed balance to their previously righty-heavy lineup. Perhaps more importantly, however, in acquiring Joey Gallo previously and now Anthony Rizzo (from the Chicago Cubs), they've brought an underrated amount of defensive improvement to their team.
The Yankees pulled off another blockbuster Thursday, this time acquiring Anthony Rizzo from the Cubs. The first baseman cost New York two prospects: pitcher Alexander Vizcaíno and outfielder Kevin Alcántara. The right-handed Vizcaíno, 24, has not pitched above High-A. He was New York’s 12th-best prospect, per Baseball America’s midseason rankings. The 19-year-old Alcántara was ranked 14th.
MLB trade deadline: Yankees acquire Anthony Rizzo, Dodgers add Max Scherzer, and Red Sox deal for Kyle Schwarber
The MLB trade deadline is Friday at 4 p.m., and, as Peter Abraham wrote, it’s a real deadline. As of 2019, waiver trades no longer exist. Players can be claimed off waivers, but that’s it. The first-place Red Sox could look for help at first base, with Cubs infielder Anthony...
Anthony Rizzo has read and heard the Red Sox trade rumors just like all the other Cubs fans have. “I have my friends texting me here and there,” said the Cubs first baseman, whose hitting is the only thing heating up faster than trade rumors in the final days before Friday’s 3 p.m. deadline.

Speaking with reporters in the nation’s capital earlier this month, Washington Nationals’ GM Mike Rizzo discussed a dual path approach to the 2021 MLB Trade Deadline, explaining that which path the club took in the end would depend on how the team performed in the lead-up to this year’s July 30th deadline.
The way the media (and many Boston fans) see it, the Boston Red Sox need a boost at first base. Considering their level of success in 2021 if the worst part of their team is at first base, how bad of a situation are they really in?. As we quickly...
The Boston Red Sox have a glaring need at first base with the 2021 MLB trade deadline rapidly approaching. As of Thursday, Red Sox first basemen rank 28th in MLB in batting average (.218), dead-last in on-base percentage (.262) and 28th in OPS (.651). The Chicago Cubs are in a fair amount of trouble with their current core. Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, and Kris Bryant are all on expiring contracts. They are all in trade rumors as a result which is only fair. There are rumors out there that they will try to extend Baez and Rizzo one more time before they take trade offers and Bryant is as good as gone. With the way the team has been playing, it seems smart to trade them all for prospects.
