Detroit Tigers year in review: Wily Peralta, the unsung hero

Wily Peralta was an afterthought signing this offseason but quickly became a reliable arm in the Detroit Tigers rotation. There were boundless concerns for pitchers heading into the 2021 season league-wide; particularly with starters. Due to a shortened 2020 season, many teams had to get creative about their approach to their rotation this year. Previewing Week 8’s top high school football games

With just two weeks left in the regular season, conference races are sorting themselves out. One is the Mid-Suburban East, where the winner here clinches a share of the title. Prospect (6-1, 3-0) has one of the league’s best defenders in end/linebacker Ben Sahakian and a productive junior quarterback in junior Frank Covey, who threw for 216 yards last week against Elk Grove. Hersey (7-0, 3-0) has had only one close game all season, a 31-24 victory over Palatine in Week 2. The Huskies have been dominant despite losing their best player, senior running back/receiver Ben Clawson, with a broken right ankle in Week 3. Quarterback Jimmy Makuh has stepped up to help keep the offense rolling along.

Scouting Week 8 football games in the Northwest suburbs

Prospect (6-1, 3-0) at Hersey (7-0, 3-0)When: Friday, 7 p.m. Last week: Prospect beat Elk Grove 57-7; Hersey beat Wheeling 42-18 Outlook: This could be a high-scoring affair from a pair of teams that know how to get to the end zone. Prospect has scored 279 points this season and has hit the 50-point mark three times thanks to the play of quarterback Frank Covey. With a win, the Knights would clinch the MSL East. Hersey has rung up 298 points this year. Quarterback Jimmy Makuh is 89-of-123 for 1,672 yards with 20 touchdowns and has yet to throw an interception. A win would earn Hersey a share of the MSL East title. The Huskies would need a win against Buffalo Grove next week to clinch outright. Despite all the offensive prowess, it still may come down to defense. Prospect has allowed just under 13 points per game while Hersey has allowed just 10 points per game and has two shutouts.
