What we learned: Malathaat not special, but still best in division

Malathaat lost the first race of her career in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at Saratoga Saturday. But despite finishing second, Malathaat ran the best race of the four fillies, while the winner Maracuja fell into luck early and took advantage. With that said, Malathaat shows once again that...

Saturday plays: Saratoga card the focus

Saratoga’s two stakes races on Saturday look difficult from a betting standpoint. As tough as this is, bettors might want to skip the featured race on the card, or both stakes races because the favorites are tough. Nevertheless, here are some thoughts on the Grade 1, $500,000 Coaching Club American...

MALATHAAT THE FAVORITE: Malathaat odds-on in Saturday's Coaching Club

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y. – The hoped-for rematch between undefeated Malathaat and once-beaten Search Results is not going to occur at Saratoga, at least not in this afternoon’s Coaching Club American Oaks (G1). The perfect (5-for-5) Curlin filly is an obvious morning-line choice (at 2-5) in a short field that includes only one other graded-stakes winner. Search Results is reportedly targeting the Test Stakes (Aug. 7), perhaps because her connections believe she is better suited for the Test’s seven furlongs than the Coaching Club’s nine. Or maybe they just don’t want to take on Malathaat again right now.

Swiss Skydiver to Take On Boys Again in Whitney

Kenny McPeek has always been one to swing for the fences where competition is concerned—as long as the bold option is one that theoretically makes sense for his contenders. So with Barn 86 at Saratoga Race Course under a 21-day quarantine implemented July 15 when an unnamed, unraced filly trained by Jorge Abreu tested positive for equine herpesvirus-1, McPeek is rerouting Swiss Skydiver —stabled in that barn along with his other Saratoga-based horses—to the Aug. 7 Whitney Stakes (G1).
