Local departments launch Project Lifesaver through PHF grant

HANCOCK — Local sheriff’s departments are partnering on a project to ensure at-risk people with cognitive impairments who wander from home can be easily located. Representatives from Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties’ sheriff’s departments announced participation in Project Lifesaver, a program that provides radio frequency transmitters to be worn by people prone to wandering. It was created by its parent company, a non-profit based in Virginia. More than 3,800 people have been rescued through the program, according to Project Lifesaver’s website.

Applications are being accepted by Portage Health Foundation for non-profit organizations interested in partnering with the foundation’s annual Giving Tuesday campaign, where PHF matches donations that come in on Giving Tuesday. Human trafficking has many faces, victims, and dark corners in this world. Even here in the Upper Peninsula, minors are exploited, and forced labor puts people in bad situations. Victims of these circumstances are looking for a way out. The Portage Health Foundation and the Upper Peninsula Human Trafficking Task Force are working together to give residents the tools they need to pick up on possible abusive or bad situations. UPHTTF President Stephanie Graef said several events in the western Upper Peninsula next week will focus specifically on human trafficking in the UP.
