Peoria City Council debates hiring more police officers, budget and potential tax increase

How and when to spend Peoria's remaining $37 million in COVID-19 federal relief dollars was again at the heart of the city's budget talks Tuesday night. Peoria's City Council heard for the first time Tuesday the city staff's recommended budget for 2022 and 2023. The upcoming budget proposed spending about $10 million of the COVID-relief funds in 2022, hiring 30 new police officers and using grant funding to hire 11 new firefighters.
