Abner Benaim’s second feature explores the relationship between a melancholy divorcee and a poor street child. Dir/scr: Abner Benaim. Panama/Mexico/Colombia. 2021. 94 mins. Twice selected as Panama’s Oscar nominee for his documentaries, Abner Benaim earns his third official entry with his second feature Plaza Catedral, a powerful but strangely detached urban drama about the relationship between a bereaved middle-class mother and a Panamanian street child that is, ultimately, a critique of the sad impossibility of that relationship. One of the film’s themes, the violence in the lives of these children, tragically played out in the real-life street killing of its teenage co-protagonist Fernando Xavier de Casta shortly after filming completed — an event that inevitably complicates any viewing of it.
Recording animals in their natural habitat is not a job for those who lack patience. Capturing just 20 seconds of a songbird's chirrup, or an elk's bugle, or a kangaroo's chortle often requires hours of stillness and solitude. It's a craft that Birmingham-born sound recordist Martyn Stewart has perfected over...

As import regulations of the European Union changed in 2019, Panama’s cocoa exports came under threat: exporters had to prove that the amount of cadmium in their products was below the EU’s legal threshold of 0.8 milligram per kilogram. Isotopic techniques can help identify the source and movement of the metal and thereby help farmers prevent contamination in the fruit – increasing food safety and restoring exports.

When it comes to diversity and inclusion, UWC Atlantic College has been leading the charge since its inception in 1962, when the famed German educationalist Kurt Hahn created the school to bridge social, national and cultural divides caused by the Cold War. Today, the college’s 356 pupils come to Wales from 90 different countries. As a delighted parent reports, ‘One of my sons shared his four-bed dorm with a Swede, an Italian and a Malaysian. The other with a Thai pupil, a Palestinian refugee, and a Panamanian. The pay off is a lifetime of diverse friends and experiences.’ Amongst the cohort are a number of European royalty, including the future Queen of Spain HRH Princess Leonor of Asturias, and HRH Princess Alexia of the Netherlands, who benefit not only from the melting pot of cultures but also the ‘authentic sense of responsibility’ instilled in pupils who ‘often think they run the college as there are so many pupil-led events, from national and international evenings to sports clubs, that it feels more like a university,’ says a parent. Housed in the stunning 12th-century St Donat’s Castle near Cardiff with a 122-acre seafront campus, where formal gardens run into valleys and woodlands, UWC students study for their IB and go onto a suitably diverse mix of universities from Ivy Leagues to European powerhouses.

We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here's a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

The 3,000-plus-seater Oakland Paramount Theater soon filled.
