Stephen Sondheim: Always ready to help

The first thought that came to mind when I heard of Stephen Sondheim’s death was how open and friendly he always was. Although private in many ways and meticulous about the detail of putting his work on stage, he gave freely and frequently of his time if the purpose and the person were serious. I had three meaningful engagements with him, and I wish the BBC will restore our Lebrecht Interview to circulation.

The masterful Meistersinger singers

I’ve been dabbling in opera tourism this fall and decided to go full-send with a trip to New York. I looked at the schedule for The Metropolitan Opera and saw that Richard Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg was upcoming. That settled it. I planned my trip around the Meistersinger performance of Thursday, November 11.

Adaptation in America

Becoming an opera librettist was, for me, a natural extension of years spent working as a playwright in downtown New York theater and experimental music-theater. That fertile stomping ground provided an immersion into the dramaturgy of space and sound, the architectonics of tension, duration, and alternate modes of language and narrative. Writing for theater, I find inspiration everywhere I look: in literature and art; in objects and their histories; in philosophical questions and crises ranging from the local to the global; in myths, fairy tales, found photos, and on the street. But I have rarely, if ever, considered the work of a contemporary writer or filmmaker as viable terrain for playmaking—or remaking. As I first began to explore the possibility of writing for opera, I found its predilection for adaptation curious.

The first flying tree was planted in Georgstrasse

Mayor Herbert Schmalsteg planted the first 58 flat trees on November 27, 1978 in order to return the Georgestrasse to the character of an avenue. The 681 consecutive numbered illustrated postcard from Friedrich Astholz Jr., who reproduced the image using a Colotype print, shows Georgstraße circa 1900. The photographer’s location was Goethestraße at the Reitwallstraße level coming from the left (with the booth in the middle of the street). Corner building in the foreground on the right with the store “August Göbelhoff, Herren-Hüte”, above the advertisement of “Julius Kauffmann & Co.” , refers to the former house on Georgstrasse 3. The entire three-legged building is on the right in the photo, where there is an advertisement on the wall for “Möbel Fabrik … Wellhausen” for Goethestrasse 2. To the left of the already electrified tram is the restaurant “Hamburger Buffet”.. .
