NetEase Games Acquires Suda51’s Grasshopper Manufacture

Grasshopper Manufacture Inc., the studio behind the No More Heroes series headed by Goichi Suda aka Suda51, has been acquired by NetEase Games. This acquisition comes as NetEase continues its growth by way of acquisitions and partnerships, with the company obtaining a minority stake in Quantic Dream, a stake in Bungie, and more, over the past few years. Grasshopper Manufacture is the latest to join NetEase’s lineup.

Conglomerate NetEase Games acquires Suda51 studio, Grasshopper Manufacture

Founded by renowned game director Goichi “Suda51” Suda, Grasshopper Manufacture has had a long history of putting out eccentric, niche games with devoted cult followings. Although the studio wields creative energy akin to that of many modern indie developers, it has always worked under the constraints of major publishers and companies to some degree. From January 2013 until just recently, Grasshopper remained a subsidiary of GungHo Online Entertainment, a Japanese studio known for its involvement with games like Ragnarok Online. That no longer remains the case, as Grasshopper announced that Chinese company NetEase Games has acquired the studio.

Grasshopper Manufacture acquired by NetEase, promises three games over next decade

Grasshopper Manufacture Inc., the Japanese developer best-known for the No More Heroes series and CEO Goichi Suda's irreverently surreal style, has been acquired from its parent company GungHo Online Entertainment by Chinese technology giant NetEase. The studio has made over 25 games in its 23 years, most directed by Suda, also known as Suda-51. As well as No More Heroes, notable titles include killer7, Shadows of the Damned, Lollipop Chainsaw, and the classic Michigan: Report from Hell.
