Oil well fire in western North Dakota burns into 6th straight day

KEENE, North Dakota — An oil well fire that started in McKenzie County on Thursday, July 22, was still burning on Tuesday afternoon, six days later. Smoke from the well pad fire, which is located on top of a hill north of Keene and a half mile south of Lake Sakakawea in western North Dakota, is visible from many miles away, the state's top oil industry regulator, Lynn Helms, told state leaders on Tuesday.

Whiting to bet on Bakken with purchase of Mountrail acres, divestiture of Colorado assets

Whiting Petroleum is betting on the Bakken with the $271 million purchase of an additional 8,752 net acres in Mountrail County from an undisclosed seller. The acreage is adjacent to Whiting’s existing operations in the Sanish Field. That will mean few additional administrative costs, and will allow Whiting to further increase capital efficiency by extending laterals on certain wells in its existing acres.

The following spills were reported to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in the past two weeks. Information is based on Form 19, which operators must fill out detailing the leakage/spill events. Any spill release that may impact waters of the state must be reported as soon as practical. Spills and leaks typically are found during routine maintenance on existing wells, though some actual “spills” do occur among the 24,000-plus wells in the county.

HARRISBURG, July 27, 2021 – The Wolf administration announced Monday it would soon require all Pennsylvania landfills to conduct quarterly testing for radiological contaminants, nearly six years after the Department of Environmental Protection produced a report on TENORM. State Rep. Sara Innamorato, D-Allegheny, and state Sen. Katie Muth, D-Montgomery, said they strongly support this requirement, but remain concerned due to the lack of details on the testing methods.

As with previous annual OOGA meetings, one of the speakers was Martin Shumway, technical director at Locus Bio-Energy Solutions. Shumway shared details from the latest DeBrosse Memorial Report (full copy below). What does the report show for 2020? Ohio oil and natural gas production both experienced steep declines last year. Oil production was down 16% from 2019, and natural gas production was down 10% from 2019. Even though the production news for 2020 is negative, this report is jam-packed with terrific, very useful information about Ohio’s shale industry.
