2021 NHL draft live updates: Pick tracker, analysis for all 32 teams

The 2021 NHL draft is complete, and we have tracked all 224 picks over two days and seven rounds, starting with the Buffalo Sabres' selection at No. 1 overall of Owen Power. This year's class of prospects came in with little consensus as per rankings and evaluations, thanks to uneven -- or nonexistent -- seasons for many junior, collegiate and/or international leagues amid the COVID-19 pandemic. But the group is extremely talented, with numerous future impact players at the NHL level.

It's that time of year again, where NHL clubs and their fans get starry-eyed with the next generation of talent set to don the sweater. The 2021 NHL Draft kicked off Friday with the first 31 of 223 selections announced. (Note: There were technically 224 slots but the Coyotes had to forfeit their first-round pick, although they did get one in a trade with the Canucks.)

2021 NHL draft winners and losers: Trades, first-round goalies, Steve Yzerman, University of Michigan hockey

A long, long ride is over. The 2021 NHL draft had a bit everything. Consider the blockbuster trades, as stars Seth Jones, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Jakub Voracek, Cam Atkinson and Sam Reinhart all changed teams. Consider the history, as one NCAA school had a record-breaking weekend. Consider the mystery, as the COVID-19 pandemic made prospect evaluation more challenging than it has ever been. And consider the controversy, as a divisive prospect who asked not to be drafted was instead taken in the first round, to considerable outrage.

The Detroit Red Wings started the week with nearly a dozen draft picks to use in the weekend's 2021 NHL draft. But by Saturday, thanks to general manager Steve Yzerman's multiple trades before and during the draft, they ended up with eight prospects joining the organization. Here's a quick look...

Bruins 2021 draft tracker: Full list of every Boston pick

Day 2 of the 2021 NHL Draft is Saturday and the Boston Bruins will be busy. The B's entered the day with six picks, the first coming in the third round at No. 85 overall. The Bruins won't be picking in the second round unless they trade back into it. Boston dealt its 2021 second-rounder to the Buffalo Sabres as part of the Taylor Hall trade in April. That move was well worth the price, though, especially after Hall re-signed on a four-year contract Friday.

NHL Draft 2021: Meet the Devils’ 7 picks from this year’s class

No. 4 - LHD Luke Hughes, U.S. National Development Program. What to know: The younger brother of Devils center Jack Hughes, Luke Hughes is the third brother from his family to go in the top 10 of the NHL Draft. He’ll attend Michigan next season, and he said he’ll likely spend two seasons in college. He’s bigger than his brothers Jack and Quinn, and he’s got the tools to be a game-changing player on both ends of the ice once he’s in the NHL.

2021 NHL Draft: Live Round 1 Grades and Analysis for Every Pick

The 2021 NHL Draft is unlike any other in recent memory. There was a level of uncertainty with this draft class from the very beginning, as the talent pool is diluted and there was no strong consensus for ranking the players. Those things tend to get sorted out over the course of the season, but the COVID-19 pandemic completely derailed that possibility for many prospects. Tournaments were canceled. Some players were forced to play in unfamiliar leagues. Some had limited seasons, and some played no more than a handful of competitive games.

2021 NHL Draft: Flyers select Samu Tuomaala at 46th overall

With the 46th pick of the 2021 NHL Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers selected Samu Tuomaala, a right winger playing for Kärpät in the Finnish Liiga. Due to the acquisition of Rasmus Ristolainen — no matter how you feel about it — the Flyers took the night off on Friday and are making their first pick in the second round. In Tuomaala they got a fairly flashy player that was ranked anywhere from the top-20 to the middle of the second round by several scouting services.

2021 NHL Draft: 2nd Round Primer for the Buffalo Sabres

I am disappointed with the National Hockey League tonight. At a time when Logan Mailloux renounced his draft candidacy and when the Chicago Blackhawks are in the midst of a very serious sexual misconduct case: to end the first round of the NHL draft in the fashion that they did was appalling.

Draft Day Two for the New Jersey Devils: 2021 NHL Draft Open Post

Last night, the New Jersey Devils used both of their first round picks in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. They made the sensible and expected pick of defenseman Luke Hughes at fourth overall. I really liked that selection. With the 29th overall pick, they kept the pick and went off the board to take right winger Chase Stillman. I really did not like that selection. Today, Tom Fitzgerald, Paul Caston, and the rest of the management and scouting team will fill out the rest of their 2021 draft class. They currently have five picks to make and we shall see the direction they go for with this group of prospects.

Pick-by-Pick: Follow the Blues at the NHL Draft

Round 1 - No. 17*. With their first-round pick (No. 17 overall), the Blues selected forward Zack Bolduc. The 19-year-old is listed at 6-foot-1 and 174 pounds. According to Elite Prospects, Bolduc "dangles through flatfooted defenders with rapid stickhandling motions, and then when given an open shooting lane, he can take a couple of steps, kick a leg back and sling pucks past the goalie."

Gone is Seth Jones, the standout who spent six years patrolling the CBJ blue line. Added are two NHL-ready defensemen and three first-round picks, talent that replenishes the Blue Jackets as they try to build themselves back up from 2021's last-place finish in the Central Division.
