Hubble telescope captures stunning image of the star-forming Prawn Nebula

The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a stunning view of the Prawn Nebula floating through deep space. The Prawn Nebula, formally known as IC 4628, is an emission nebula located 6,000 light-years from Earth, in the constellation Scorpius. Nebulas, or clouds of interstellar gas and dust, form following massive stellar explosions; in turn, this interstellar material gives life to new stars.

💍 Ring NebulaAlso called Messier 57, this nebula is about 2,000 light-years away! Learn more about this beautiful cosmic object: #NebulaNovember

This close-up, visible-light view by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope reveals previously unseen details of the Ring Nebula. The object is tilted toward Earth so that astronomers see the ring face-on. The Hubble observations reveal that the nebula's shape is more complicated than astronomers thought. The blue gas in the nebula's center is actually a football-shaped structure that pierces the red doughnut-shaped material. Hubble also uncovers the detailed structure of the dark, irregular knots of dense gas embedded along the inner rim of the ring. The knots look like spokes in a bicycle. The Hubble images have allowed astronomers to match up the knots with the spikes of light around the bright, main ring, which are a shadow effect. The Ring Nebula is a well-known planetary nebula, the glowing remains of a Sun-like star. The tiny white dot in the center of the nebula is the star's hot core, called a white dwarf. The nebula is about 2,000 light-years away in the constellation Lyra. The structure measures roughly one light-year across. These Hubble observations were taken September 19, 2011, by the Wide Field Camera 3. In the image, the deep blue color in the center represents helium; the cyan color of the inner ring is the glow of hydrogen and oxygen; and the reddish color of the outer ring is from nitrogen and sulfur. Hubble Witnesses Bright Shock Wave of Colliding Gases in Running Man Nebula

Mounded, luminous clouds of gas and dust glow in this Hubble image of a Herbig-Haro object known as HH 45. Herbig-Haro objects are a rarely seen type of nebula that occurs when hot gas ejected by a newborn star collides with the gas and dust around it at hundreds of miles per second, creating bright shock waves. In this image, blue indicates ionized oxygen (O II) and purple shows ionized magnesium (Mg II). Researchers were particularly interested in these elements because they can be used to identify shocks and ionization fronts.

Look at the nebula, where four huge stars prevent other stars from developing

NASA has posted a new image on the Hubble Space Telescope website. The photo shows the Orion Nebula. NASA has shown an impressive image of the Orion Nebula taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The new image is the sharpest image ever taken in this area. The photo shows more than 3,000 stars of different sizes. Some of them have never been observed in visible light.

In a queer galaxy far, far away

For the bulk of my lifetime, the Star Wars universe was a very, very heteronormative place. The films were all pretty straight, and even when there was a hinted same-sex romance in the sequel trilogy, it never came to pass. In the “expanded universe” of tie-in books, comics and games, there was a non-reciprocal same-sex attraction in the 2003 video game Knights of the Old Republic, an obliquely-referenced same-sex relationship with the main character of the young adult series The Last of the Jedi from 2005 to 2008 and a reference to a same-sex spouse of a tertiary character in a 2008 novel—and that was about it.
